Slow/Heartbreak at Linda Mar...

My brother and I trolled out and down past Pedro Point, then back...no birds, no bait, no salmon. Then we jigged with scampis for some SLLOOOOOOOOWWWWW fishing. We caught and released a 14" cab and I hooked what was probably the biggest ling I've had. I never saw it, and was only able to pull it a few cranks up from the bottom before it made a couple runs and set up camp in the rocks where I couldn't budge it. A couple pumps and SNAP went the line! I almost cried, and shouted a slew of profanities.

So if you catch a ling with a white scampi w/stinger hook in its mouth, I want that lure back. I'm going to religiously use 40lb Mason leaders from now on...30lb mono isn't enough.

Anyway, two bites for the day - it wasn't worth the effort. Nobody else was catching ANYTHING. Very slow, very strange. Should have stayed home...

Bad day as it was, still beats going to work or watching T.V

Tim, my friend Steve and I were fishing next to you guys this morning and it was slow for us too.  Between the 3 of us we only caught 2 small blacks unless Tim caught something else on his way in.

We did see a resident seal working the area so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with the absence of rock fish?

My newbie friend Steve made a succesfull entry and exit with no problems.   The waves were small but he at least had a chance to practice the fundamentals.  I suspect that Bean Hollow had the same minimal surf (Eric?).  There was no wind in the morning but it picked up at about 10:30.  Off the water at 11:30.

Rich (Granite Dive) stopped to chat in the parking lot.  There was a solo free diver and solo scuba diver looking for halibut but neither one found any.

I heard some screaming about a lingzilla so too bad Malibu_Two, you'll catch one next time.  I use 50 lb test leaders myself but I didn't get a ling to bite today.

The surfers in the parking lot were complaining about how flat the surf was today.  Bad news for them and good news for us.

Good to see that a few of us were fishing instead of sitting at home reading the Sunday paper.  We'll see you folks next week at the HMB tourney.

Yep, i saw you guys out there! Good to see other kayakers, making a minimal footprint on the land, or ocean, although I'd rather leave a big footprint by taking home a big ling!

i don't know about the seal lions chasing away (or eating) all the rockfish; there have been sea lions and seals around before but I've never seen it this bad for everyone...I'm hoping this is a temporary lull of some sort.

That was my brother #2 freediving...there have hardly been any fish of any sort around lately...if it keeps up, I'll be worried.

Mickfish - the used wheels are from a go kart courtesy of EBay ($20 + $10 shipping).  If you got a close look at them you would see that the rims are bent and there's not a lot of tread left.  For those of you who have buddies that are into karting I'm sure they would give you their dented up, bald wheels for next to nothing.  Sorry, I'm not a golfer but I'm sure the golf carts in Danville are made out of gold to match their attitudes.  I think I'm the only one in the neighborhood that mows my own lawn and washes the family cars in the drive way.

Malibu_Two - It would appear that the rockies are scarce up and down the coast unless you find good structure.  About the divers, free diving with friends on yaks watching out for you is one thing but the scuba diver was by himself.   

Looks like Bean Hollow was the place to be today but the surf at LM was perfect for newbies.

Sorry to hear about loss but the water was like a lake, that at least makes for a good day.

Yep very slow at LM today. Caught one black ( release) and a ling too close to call ( also release) on the way in. Witness Malibu-Two going bendo too bad it go off. Try a trolling for striper at the surf area for nada. Got  too close to the breaker and flip over. I was amazed at the amount of people surfing despite the lack of swell. TOO crowded to troll and call it a day

Sounds like Bean Hollow was good...I'm there next time.
