As raised on the "5 best rockfish lures" thread:
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=8162.0

Cost to enter has not yet been determined, but figure in the $5-10 range. Entry fee will be mostly used to pay for the supplies, with the winner getting the change, and mad props from his/her peers. What will be supplied will be one wrench of as yet undetermined type, in the 4"-5" length range, two appropriately sized split rings, and a large treble or Siwash hook.

Given that the coordinator will need to purchase the wrenches beforehand, registration of contestants would close at 12:00 noon on 6/1/2007. All that is required to register, is to reply to this post. If you can't make it after "registering", then cancel here by registration deadline. Those that register, but don't cancel and don't show, will be called big fat doodyheads.

Contestants are given 15 minutes to modify their wrench. But, just as no two tiers will make a fly the exact same way, contestants would be allowed to use (1) item supplied on their own. That could be a hootchie, paint, grub, yarn, bucktail, mylar, etc... Contestants would need to provide all their own tools needed to make the lure. So having a cordless drill and a pair of pliers would be a really good idea. Bringing a portable generator to run your belt sander, and/or an oxy-acetylene torch will result in tool envy, but is legal.

A mini-tourney, in that official wrench fishing time would be between 7:00-9:00. Contestants would need to be paired for catch validation purposes. Meet just South of Mavericks at 9:00 for an on the water measurement. Big fish wins. Then continue fishing with regular gear if so desired.

Purpose of the tourney would be to have some good old fashioned fun, as well as perhaps to get some of the new crew that haven't been in the salt a good chance to launch out of a harbor with more experienced folks. Plus it's opening weekend north of Pigeon Point.

Regards,
Scott

Should be interesting.  Unless I have my dates mixed up I think some of us will be down in San Diego for the "Unfinished Business" trip.

Hey - it looks like my wife has booked me up in Auburn for that weekend, and the response has been underwhelming. Maybe this is an idea for Sunday at Elk?

Sunday at Elk would be cool. The other possible is a stand alone day in July.

Saturday the 9th would be fine as well.

I've found 6" adjustable wrenches at Wally world for all of $1.88. I'm going to be heading over to Harbor Freight this weekend, and will see what they have as well.

Scott

sign up for harbor freights newsletter, I get daily coupon books in emails, usually it's around 1/3 to 1/2 off their already low prices.

We should be allowed to use all the wrenches we need in case we snag.  A nice chrome set of box end wrenches would offer a good variety of sizes too from 2 oz and 4" to 6oz and 10".  ;)

Also, wrenches are made with hardened steel, it may be VERY hard to drill a hole in them for a split ring without a drill-press.

These look promising if we can find them on sale:

Walmart also has box end wrench assortments of 9 sizes for $6.88.  I got one and will try one out on my next outing.

For some of the longer box end wrenches I'd probably want to cut them in half.  A 12" iron is a bit on the big side for nearshore fishing.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Just wondering, did this ever happen?
