I broke two cases recently. They sent me free of charge two cases and a handlebar mount.  Too badly they're "out of biz" and don't make any plus size iPhone cases...

I’ve been using the Lifeproof for many generations. It’s slim & pretty responsive compared to other cases I tried.
Dropped bunch of times but never cracked the screens too.
I work on the muddy water, so super nice I can rinse off after.

Is there such a thing as an iPhone case that is waterproof when connected to a charger (assuming the cable itself is waterproof, that is)?

Lifeproof case worked great for mine when I WAS a fan of Apple.  After 2 years, the phone looked like it came out of the showroom case despite having been dropped in water, dust, dirt & thrown across a room into a rock wall.  Little $$ but worth it IMHO.  Would have bought one for my current phone but they are somewhat selective of the models they make them for.

Based on the reviews on Amazon, Lifeproof looks like it's hit or miss, without much in between. For the iPhone 6 model, 42% give 5 stars and 23% with 1 star...

For what's it worth, I had two Lifeproof cases and liked them. The only problem was that a lot of folks on the receiving end said that they couldn't hear me or I sounded like I was in a tunnel. I ditched the Lifeproof and don't regret it. I don't regularly take my phone with me, but when I do I generally store it in a dry bag until needed. I use a waterproof camera for all my photo needs.
