Greetings all. After many years fishing from the bank, I ‘m biting the bullet and buying my first fishing kayak, a Perception Pescador. I’m looking forward to trying it out in places like Richardson’s Bay, Tomales Bay, Monterey, and various lakes in the Foothills and Sierras. As an angler, I’m more interested in catching a range of species, rather than focusing on trophy species like halibut or salmon.
Any advice welcome. Thanks to all for this forum...

Welcome!

I'm not sure your boating or kayaking experience but all those places you mentioned are some serious water.  Tides, winds, and conditions can change very quickly.  If this is your first yak, then I'd recommend trying waters closer to you and get used to your kayak first.  And try to never go out alone in new waters.  Its more fun with a buddy.

Welcome to NCKA!

+1 about safety, if you’re not an experienced paddler, start at a local lake. Be safe!

Welcome!

Definitely get comfortable with the boat in easier water before going out where conditions might change on you and catch you off guard.

Also, check some of the threads on this site about safety gear and practices, it's really important.

Thanks to all for the good advice re: safety. I have a bit of experience kayaking on the places I mentioned, but it's been a few years, so I'll definitely be taking it easy to start.

I haven't decided whether to go with a 10' or 12' boat. I understand the pros and cons of each, and that I should really test them out before making a purchase. But I can't seem to find a rental company that offers Perception Pescador kayaks.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
