vhf radio

i got a handheld vhf radio recently a uniden mhs126.it has a lot of nice features including being submersible rated.i got it for safety and also to be able to talk to other yakkers[and boats] are there radio channels that most people use. any advice on this subject appreciated

Ch 69 for kayakers who are not anti-social, while other non-emergency channels seem to vary by location...

Do the radio check when you are relatively close to shore.  Also, make sure you attach the radio to your PFD.  It will not do any good if it sinks or float away ...

usally once your in your yak! and I ask the harbor master for a check to!

Radio check on 69 from <insert your location>
When you hear a come back, the ACK may include their location, so you know your radio's approximate range.  Same with your come back on a check, may want to include your location and signal strength status.

I hear you three by five : coming in weak, but can make out what your saying

Meaning strength and readability

I've never ordered a five by five from In and Out.  5 patties, 5 cheese.  I've getting a 2 by three, two patties 3 cheese with whole grilled onion.  Have a great day Vick...over and out

Asking for a radio check on 69 in the Cove will leave you feeling mighty lonely!
The Go-To channel here is 68
Check local areas if you are unsure
Unless you are with others from NCKA, A call for assistance on 69 could leave you without.
