had a clinic with four anglers today at MBK.

it was cold and grey skies with a southwest breeze about 3-5 kts when we launched at 7:45, increased to about 8kt by 11am, still SW.

Went to the red buoy and eveyone immediately got a fish (actually 65 FOW outside and East of the buoy.

After that, it was a really hard pick.  Everyone got one or two more fish that was it.

Very slow, no concentrations of fish anywhere.  We tried deeper, then shallow by the kelp.

I was getting worried these guys would not be eating fish tonight when I got the hail mary lingcod on a whole squid slow troll, just outside the kelp line  inside of the red buoy.

About 30" and plenty of meat to dole out to the two fellows that had promised their wives fish dinner.

Water temp was 56, maybe that has something to do with it, early season cold water?  the bite was better there two weeks ago, temp was 59-60.

One of the fellows, Kurt, has been lurking here, I'm encouraging him to post soon. I predict  he's the guy that's going to keep kayak fishing (also the guy that caught the most fish)  WTG Kurt, on a difficult day.

I've been watching all the reports saying the rockfishing was slow this week. I think it has to do with the minor tides this week. I have noticed in the past, my best days were when we had bigger tides that really got the drift going. As soon as the drift stopped or slowed down the bite went off like a switch. So, I conclude, if you have lesser tides, fish the bay for stripers and halibut (the water's clearer) and if you have greater tides fish the rockies, or sturgies. Rockies like the movement, and sturgies love the mud... Now salmon, who knows... :smt102 Just hope for calm conditions.

yeah, I think maybe it was just that area.  i heard the refs off North coast of Santa Cruz were decent today, and the pt pinow area in the deep water 18-240 has been producing steadily for the past month.

You know, I was thinking about that rock wall jetty just beyond the commercial wahrf.  isn't that area OK for rcockfishing?  I don't want to run afoul of the Ricketts preserve....any help with that area?  Pat, Randy?  Aaron?  Sacyak?

It's legal to fish, but I've never caught anything over there, Allen.  Anyone else?  You should find out what JohnGuineaPig might have seen there.
