I'm planning to use a drop shot rig for hali and I'm wondering whether 2oz is overkill. Should I just stick to 1 oz? It just seems so weird to me to be used so little weight from shore when usually 3+ oz pyramid weights are used for other rigs in Bay Area waters/conditions.

From shore, how far you casting?  Are you using live bait?  Does the tide rip there?  2oz works drifting or from a pier,  but if your bait travels you will be parallel t the shore before you know it.  Bring a few different sizes and try it.  Every spot is different.  For Hali, bait on bottom is general rule.

The more I think about it the more I want to flyline a live bait from the shore and feed it line to see how far it goes...maybe with a small split shot...

50-100 ft from shore I’m guessing? Im planning to but a 9’ Okuma SST M so however far that casts. I’m just worried that it won’t be able to handle Bag Area conditions. It’s rated up a 1oz lure and the MH is rated up to 1.5oz. I’m planning to use a 4 inch grup and the occasional life anchovy.

Are you saying your rod might break due to water conditions or big fish...my 1/4-1oz lami 8'6"can cast a 4oz weight as far as I can chuck it if I have to.  I've reeled up huge stingray with it and it is spec for 10-20lb test and I run 30 lb braid on it.  Maybe I'm asking for trouble.  So far so good...

I'm just worry that it'll overload the rod and won't cast properly or as far. But I guess we'll just have to see! I'll go with the MH version. I'm jealous of your gear!
