Decided to try my luck south because I had heard the viz in Ft Bragg was terrible. Originally wanted to shoredive south of Carmel but the big sur marathon killed those aspirations. Decided to hit some old stomping grounds out of Stillwater. The predicted wind never made it to Carmel but the sloppy left over seas did. Started north of ghost trees with a newly met dive partner. We hopped in to a churning sea with 15-20 ft of viz. We were diving 45-65ft on good structure but the fish were nonexistent. On my 8th drop i was decending and noticed a nice pile of boulders with a patch of sand between them and thought that would be a good place for a vermillion to sit. I laid flat on a rock at 57' and looked below me in a horizontal crack and there was a cute little 17"er staring right at me. First fish down. Few drops later and I found a 33" ling in a hole at 55'. Shot in the head and onto the stringer. Hit one more spot where I took an 18" olive before retreating to calmer waters. Played around in the shallows and passed on 4 or 5 smaller monkeyface and took a small blue and greenling for doty. Called it a day and was treated to seeing a gray whale spouting off in the bay past the pier on the paddle in. Good to get some diving in even if it wasnt very fishy.

“I’m going fishing.”  They said, “we will go with you.”

Nice! If it weren't for the sharks I would love to learn the sport ;)
