Hi Carina,

Welcome to NCKA. I started out with no kayak experience and very little confidence. But over the years I have learned the it is possible to acquire the knowledge to do just about anything.

So a few months ago I took a level 1 sea kayak class followed by the the level 2 class. Those classes are typically thought with sit inside kayaks. They teach different paddling techniques and most importantly assisted and self rescue. After that I started going out and spending time in the local lakes getting used to the kayak I have. I have now been out in the Bay twice and after a couple more times I will feel confident to go out in the ocean.

Just take small steps and you can do it.

I took lessons from CCK but there are several places in the Bay Area that offer them. There are also kayak fishing guides that will take you out and they will supply everything you need.
