Mike, if you ever want to do organizational consulting, I'm pretty sure you'd have plenty of clients!

Both.  Just buy all the tackle, always, never tell your wife how much you spend, and organize it in such a way that you need to go buy more tackle.

Seems to work for me.

When my wife throws a shit fit I take her to the grocery store and show her the price of farmed salmon, un-identifiable rockfish fillets, and whole dead frozen "fresh" dungeness. 60% of the time, it works every time.

I keep a big pile of backstock in the closet, then organize to-go packs by target species in ziplock bags.

The advantage is I just put a little of what I need to actually go fish for a particular species, and I can always change out an old bag.

I use the Plano 3600 softsider on the boat. It holds 3 of the tackle organizer boxes. I have 9 of them 3 for salmon, 3 for ocean fishing, 3 for lake fishing. All 3 sets have fuses for FF battery. Now for my main storage I have 3 large Plano’s and 3 dedicated cubbirds as well as 2 drawers.

I like this.  Currently I use my kids old and discarded backpacks to carry my tackle boxes  :smt001

Mr. Tote...that, my friend, is exactly what I needed to see.  I will commence in this style of mental excercise and action.  It is a fishing library.  If I ever open one I'll need a curator.  Thanks for the links, 9 years ago and going strong?

I have downsized my tackle arsenal quite a bit. Would rather see someone get use out of some things than have them just sitting around.
It's still organized, and I still use the same containers, just a lot fewer of them so I son't need the catalog to find stuff.
I did most of that while recovering from my 2nd or 3rd shoulder surgery, I forget which one it was. It was quite therapeutic.

Organizing by species has been good for me. Although that leaves me buying a lot of duplicate gear

There is a strange truth to that. :smt006

+1 This is my problem. I organized tackle based on water/species, but I do end up buying more. Now, I just pick out what I think I'm going to use and put it a Plano box.

Just 2 tackle boxes for me:  1 for salt water & 1 for fresh water.  But fishing rods, reeks, lures, etc...are everywhere in my car garage!

recently, i purchased another hobie shoe box that drops in my rectangular hatch. now i have one for salt and the other for fresh. i no longer bring plano box with rod holders in the back. everything i need goes in the shoe box. only downside is i forget my FF sometimes cuz it's in the other box, LOL.
