looks like the wind predictions are pretty crappy for the weekend
I have a recipe or two for that if you want it

blue, whaddya got?  a sail?  a calm dance?

I am still watchin and waitin Ben...  sure hope noaa's wrong too, and that we don't hit muir at it's bottom 10%...

from coastside today
Quote
Conditions were snottier than you would think. Tight steep 3 foot wind waves. No swell. Very, very cold in the wind. Felt colder than it has all year.

cafecraig either stop in someplace up there and have a nice lunch and a beer

or launch Muir
shoot around the corner and slug it out as far as you can get
troll on the ride back down
don't make any mistakes
repeat as tolerated
you can usually get out of the wind inside muir cove for a breather

the way the coastside guy described conditions
the gap between the rock and the point could be rough especially if there are currents ripping through there and that'll extend out pretty far

but if you can get around the corner and up a ways it gets better

They also reported a lot of bait in there There are fish in there for certain, just nobody's going out in this weather If you luck out with the wind it should be primo

I'll be sitting home talking to myself

I know what you mean.  It's nice that you can talk to yourself - at least you will have company then.  Works for me too.

And thanks for the advices!  I think tomorrow is supposed to be just about the same as today.  I just hope to see that thick fog rolled in and the winds stay down for most of the morning.

I was thinking of just a 2-hour zigzag up, and a 2-hour zigzag down and home, out/down and east to land.  (I don't care for crosswinds though).  Will see which strategy Ben wants to pursue.

How far offshore were you when you caught last weekend?  2mi?  1mi?  Depth approx?  It's 50-60 FOW for a ways out up there, so I was just curious about distance off shore.

Just saw your plan to launch from Muir this weekend.
This might help:

I went this morning, it sucked. The cove was fairly protected, but no sign of fish. Paddling north was a battle that I did not win. Was afraid if I headed south that I would not make it back to Muir.
A cold, nasty, unforgiving morning. Nobody on the water but me and a few borderline harassing seals.
Out by the point, I felt like I was fishing the Farallones with the wind, boiled water, and even a little sharky feeling.
Briefly stopped paddling to tie a knot, the current was like a conveyor belt and shuttled me about half a mile. Soaked by waves breaking over the kayak. Very grateful for wetsuit.
Mystery readings on fishfinder- some really big solid stuff- wide dense bait columns I hope. A small dose of heebie jeebies for Alex.
Came back in to find a beautiful and pleasant day on land.

Thanks for the intel and ideas, both you guys... Yikes, I had no idea it was that bad this morning.  Let me see what Ben thinks...  My car can't haul 2 boats, though, so either up or down, we'd be leaving a boat on the sand while we dropped or picked up a vehicle.  Unless Anita was convinced to drop Ben off at Stinson (or Bolinas?), where I'd leave my car, and then meet us at Muir with the truck and drop me off back at the top.... I guess I better stuff something in my drain too.   I can pick up a plug at Outback on the way home.  heh.

I really expected it to be better than that.  Pretty ballsy of you going alone with the weather up like it's been, Alex!

Ben let me know what you wanna do, or if you wanna try next weekend instead.  Current forecast does show a window of low swell next weekend.

BlueKayak: the shuttle idea would have worked today. I wonder if the boats would beat a driver back to Muir!

Cafecraig:  It didn't look too bad from shore, or I probably would have passed. Apparently Muir is less than 14 miles from my door.
After I paddled back in, I briefly answered some questions about the conditions to some joggers, who looked at me like I was crazy. It looked a bit breezy from the sand, but nothing telling of reality once near the large black rock
Plan to get wet.

I might bail and hit Black point for a dino instead. I like to move out there, I hate that struggle for 1/10th of a mile an hour shit.

I hear ya Ben... Good luck!   I'm not prepared to do the dino thing and I'm all rigged for salmon and have bagged bait which I am not sure will be so good next weekend.  Plus I just have a feeling that there's fish out there.  I am still open to going if there's a courageous soul who's up for an adventure!

Let me know by like 9 or so tonight, if anyone out there's into it!  Would want to launch at 7am, though, to get a head start uphill.

Ill be listening to the forecast so I guess Ill know in the am, there are fish out there.
Got some bigass tray baits too. I had to buy another big net after the hoodlums ran off with my other one at Mendo and its HUGE! Anita fits in it. Biggest net ive ever had. Im sure to just love it in the wind.

Yeah I have one of those bigass nets too... It's really a sail in disguise, I swear.

I'm waiting on the updated forecast now and will keep checking the buoy reports.  Wind at bodega buoy has dropped 2 kts just in the past hour.  I'll check it again before i head out in the morning.

I might even go alone tomorrow - the strategy would be to start earrrly (7-ish) and leave the net down and the gear up, stay fast and low with no drag, and just paddle uphill and get as close to stinson as i can, 1-2 miles offshore, then drop gear, open the net and start fishing and take it easy zigzagging back in as the wind starts to pick up.  I'd keep everything I need on deck and in my seat pouch.

Not everyone's cup of tea, paddling and not trolling, but I really think if i can get uphill far enough, I can hookup on the way back down, and have more fun too.  Now, if i were a bluekayak machine, I'd have a different strategy....  I kinda got to bein a blob in the offseason, so I gotta work with it for awhile i guess.

If you decide late or early tomorrow that you are up for it after all, call my cell.  I will be up at 5am checking the weather, then out the door at 5.30 if i go.
