I don't think anyone has said it yet.  Don't go into the ocean alone.  Take a buddy.  Yeah, some guys here do it, but your odds of something going seriously wrong go exponentially up if you're alone out there.  Plus, it's funner when you're with a buddy.

And the radio, get the radio.

Good luck and see you out there!

Like everybody else said, safety first.

And if you’re looking for good places to fish, don’t go to Santa Cruz. There are no fish there.

A farmer john isn't a wetsuit, it's the bottom half of a wetsuit.  Get something that completely covers your arms, like surfing wetsuits.

Unless you go with Bushy and his magic whistle.

Thanks for everyones posts, they were all super helpful!

I ended up buying the farmer johns posted by you guys above, but will probably also buy a dry suit jacket for those colder days.  Im also in the market for a radio, does anyone have good recommendations?  Is there a general frequency people use for coast guard in the bay area or emergency frequency?

Ill poke around for groups that go out kayaking but if you know of any existing threads I can look at to see when people plan to go out kayaking please let me know :)

I use Standard Horizon for radio.  Channel 16 is general announcement and emergency.  Most of us use channel 69.  There are other channels, but those two are a good start.

Check out the events and tournament section also. There is a get together at Clear Lake soon. You can meet some of the guys, enjoy the potluck and get to fish too.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
