Well Nuts

Has anyone used Well Nuts for fasteners? They have a rubber sleeve with a nut in the end - the sleeve compresses back on the hole when the bolt is tightened down so it forms a water tight seal. Seems like a good idea although the hole has to be kinda large - almost 3/8th inch. These were supplied with an anchor trollt kit from kayakfishingstuff.com. Thanks for any feedback. Tom

Rivets are stronger and use a much smaller hole.

I used some for my RamRod holder and fishfinder holder. I thought it was a cheap and smart way to get it done. I didn't have any knowledge about rivets and screws into the yak just sounded like there would be a lot of reasons for trouble.

So far the wellnuts have done ok, been installed for about 6 months or so. But if the OG's recommend rivets, sounds like the ticket.

WellNuts, even the stainless steel version (if there is one) will rust pretty fast.
But please give me all your un-used well nuts for my motorcycle fairings
TeeNuts work too, just rough'n up the inside surface w/sand paper. They come in SS version.

I have them in a few places on both my kayaks. No rusting or leakage. One kayak is over a year old. The other is 6 months old. If you use them, make sure you tighten them down all the way. That will compress the rubber and create a seal. Also, be carefuul not to push the entire rubber sleeve thru the hole when you are first applying pressure to them with the screwdriver.
