Yes it is Mother's Day. What better way to say I love you to your mother than bring home a slab of salmon?  Anyone want to join us?

Launching from Drakes Bay Beach, southern end of Pt. reyes.

Jeremy

Don't forget that if you are going for salmon, and the road is open you can launch all the way at the tip of the pt-- by the old coastguard lifeboat launching station-- Chimney rock trailhead. You'll probably need a cart.
That launch puts you about a 10-20 min paddle from teh Chimney Rock bouy

Here's what Steve is talking about
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=4478.msg36239#msg36239

If you have 2+ people and leave earrrrrly (7am-ish), you can probably drive down top the lifeboat house, unload your gear real fast and then drive back up the hill and park in the circle lot, walk back down and then help each other hoist your boats over the gate.

Like Steve said, that puts you just about right at Chimney Rock.

Loads of salmon reported there now - easy limits.   I would consider going if the weather lays down.  It gets real windy up there and they're saying it's supposed to be pretty blown out this weekend (20-30mph).

At least the above launch is very protected (bathtub launch).

I will know by Friday if I might do it.  I also have a friend coming in town Saturday so that might put the kibosh on it for me.

That's the place!
I launched there june last year (just the week b4 the road closed), did exactly what you said- drove down unloaded, drove back up and parked...no one batted an eye. Did same for the reload. Ended up with a nice nice limit for the BBQ....
Great thing is that you can stop at the overlook and scope for bait/birds--then try to paddle to them once you launch.

Be careful of two things there:
The winds- they can howl, usually out of the North- so start uphill
The reef - when you turn N around the point the reef runs nearly out to the Chimney Bouy- waves can break along that thing farther out than you think

PR looks like the place to be right now for salmon according to Coastside.  Swell looks alright, but that damn wind does not.  If I didn't already have Mothers Day plans, I would consider joining you guys.  If you guys go, I hope you score.

Thanks for the well wishes Chuck!  Hopefully that will bring about a good day.

Shame that weather looks like it's coming in Friday night.  Looks a bit hairy, esp. Sunday and Monday.

We'll see - sometimes it never materializes.

Jeremy it sounds awesome... Gotta love the enthusiasm!   Just that Sunday is predicted to be pretty blown out (20-30mph winds and 8-10 swells).  Even 15-25 seemed pretty brutal there when i was out in it.  To me it always seems to be worse right around the point than anywhere else.  That's why Saturday was suggested - weather looks better.  In any case, I wish I could go but I can't cause my non-yal buddy wants to do the party boat thing Saturday.

Next time if the weather is good, I would probably be up for it.

If you do go Sunday I hope you'll have a good report to post!

Chuck, Steve, or Craig:
Any idea how to ID where the legal fishing begins off Pt. Reyes? I think there's a MLPA issue, not sure if it's driven by distance from land (in which direction) or by depth of the water. And what about inside Drakes Bay, not the protected seal area in Drakes Estero (which leads to Drakes Bay...)

How about that sunken ship just off the S. Tip?

I don’t know if this helps without a map/chart, but this is from the regs.

Point Reyes Headlands State Marine Conservation Area.  This area is bounded by the mean high tide line, a distance of 1000 feet offshore and the following points:

37º 59.73’ N. lat.  123º  01.46’ W. long.;
37º 59.73’ N. lat.  123º  01.68’ W. long.;
37º 59.40’ N. lat.  122º  57.60’ W. long.; and
37º 59.40’ N. lat.  122º  57.81’ W. long.;

I was told that you have to be 1000 feet from shore... not exactly sure where though.

I got a report from Jack, Ford, and Frank who fished and dropped crab pots off Chimney Rock/Pt. Reyes yesterday.  They trolled FBR's and got skunked on salmon and only caught a few squeeker dungies.  They said they got hammered by the cold wind.  It must have been bad because these dudes from Linda Mar are tough as nails.

I felt bad because I'm the one who told them about the Pt. Reyes salmon reports and got them to check it out for us.

Jeremy,

If you look at the thread I pasted above, the map is in the 2nd post of that.

Chuck, half the bay area was salmon fishing yesterday due to the great reports from the week, which I think were pretty common knowledge and widely circulated, just as the fame of the winds around the Point.  So really, I hope you don't sweat it!

Me and my buddy even got skunked on the party boat yesterday, where we had 9 fish for 25 people.  That was about the average for the fleet yesterday,  Slowwwwwwwwww pick.  Friday was only slightly better.

We'll get 'em sometime!
