This saturday I'm doing an overnight sail to check out KFOG Kaboom from a sailboat and then we're gonna moor up at Angel Island.

Anyone have any fishing tips for AI?

Try getting out on a point and casting a rig for sharks with a big sinker into the shipping channel.  One of the PFIC guys caught a sixgill shark there once.  Between angel island and sausalito is also on of the favorite haunts of sevengills to 150lbs.

OK, sounds like a plan.  I'm gonna bring two rigs: a bass rig and then an iron leader  outfit loaded for bear (ahem, shark).

thx,

You can also try for Halibut off the SW side of the island - the cove that roughly faces between Alcatraz and GG Bridge.  Good Luck!

I no loger live in the SF Bay area but I have taken my sailboat to watch one of what KFOG used to call a sky concert.  Is the Kaboom the same thing?  It was very cool anchored near the launch barge and listening to the simulcast at the same time.  BBQ on deck and then sail home at night.  Fun times.  Add fishing and it will be even better!

I would also keep an eye on the tides.  The current really roars through this stretch when the tides are big.

It sounds like an awesome time - you sure are livin it bro'!

I got a striper in the NW corner, trolling a hairraiser, and a halibut form the NE beach by the old hospital grounds with a rattletrap.

Thanks for all the tips guys.  I didn't yakfish so I'm going to keep it out of the reports section.

Had a GREAT time out there for the K-FOG KABOOM concert.  Their fireworks show makes the display at Great America look like a duddy sparkler.  Unbelievable pyrotechnics.  Must have set off 10,000 rockets from the FOUR barges positioned off Pier 30.  it's so amazing to see the show from the water, looked like the cnn ocverage of Baghdad for desert storm!  Just great.  I'll post some pics later.

The fishing:  I managed to bum some anchovies off of the boat in the adjacent slip when we lunched at angel island.  we anchored off of Tiburon in 16 feet of water on about 75 feet of anchor chain.  I threw out an anchovy on a circle hook with a #4 circle hook (6'6" triggerstick/ shimano curado 50lb spectra) hoping to pick up a shark or something.  About 20 minutes into a soak, line starts peeling off.  I pick up the slack and I'm hookedup for about 5 seconds. PING!  Line goes limp and I lose my terminal rig.  Couldn't find (and didn't bring) my steel leaders, even though you all warned me!

Toss out the second anchovy, this time pinned it to a 3 oz megabait tied directly to the spectra.  Again, about 15 min into a soak, it gets picked up.  I set, and its ON!!!  Thing starts taking me from the bow up the port side.  i'm ducking and dodging the rigging and cleats - not easy to fish from a sailboat, and in pitch black!!

Throw the drag down full and this thing just goes on 50-70 yrd runs at will.  the pole is seriously bendo and I'm thinking what the hell is this?!  Whatever it was, it had some shoulders.  Can't even see the direction of line b/c its pitch black.  Finally get flashlight on and the thing heads directly under the boat.  I'm playing it, trying to coax it out from under there.  I can feel the line rubbing against the hull and suspect its lined me up against the keel.  Rubbing, rubbing, then PING!  off.

Tried again with my remaining anchovys for missed bites.  Switched to polish sausages when I ran out of bait.  The wind and cold caught up with me at about 0130 hrs, and I packed it in.  Nothing landed, but boy was that fun.

Next time I'm bringing steel leaders, a headlamp, bunch of squid and a bag of anchovys.  If there's enough interest, I'd like to set up an overnight trip with some NCKA'ers and get some revenge out there.  We could rent a ship with a half dozen anglers or so and just wreak havoc on the place.  Let's do it!!

It's always a good sign when they cut your line, bat rays don't do that.

It would be kind of fun to go on a kayak camping trip to angel island.  Pack up, paddle the channel, then hang out around the island.  The current REALLY rips through there though so it'd have to be well timed with the tides.  That also precludes kayakfishing to a large extent because you have to anchor or fish on a slack tide.  Still hiking the island and shorefishing could be fun, along with drinking beers and watching alcatraz, the gate and city at night.

just wanted to share some pics.

There were all kinds of law  enforcement boats cordoning off the "restricted zone" 1000 ft radius from the barges.  bet we couldn't snuck past 'em kind of stealth like on a black 'yak. :smt003

you can really see the current running through raccoon straits.

the boat in the foreground is the new el dorado.  in fact, many party boats were running fireworks charters that night - saw the butchi B and a few others.
