Me and my friend went out inbetween lovers point and otters cove. We were blessed with a good 15 foot visibility. I looked in a bunch of holes and I shot a nice rockcod (no idea what kind tho) and my first monkey face!!! So stoked!! Too bad I have to go too school tomorrow  :smt013. I hope to be out next weekend!!

That's a nice Grass rockfish!

Very tasty!

A common ID issue for folks is to confuse grassies with kelpies...

The grassy's head is a lot bigger and their body is stockier. The biggest external clues are the oversized fleshy pectoral fins of the grassy. The kelpies pecs are thinner and less fleshy.

Also...getting a grassy up to 18-19 inches is not that uncommon, but it is very rare to see a kelpy much over 16 inches.

Also...you will often see kelpies suspended up in mid water column either out in the open or right around their kelp stalk....almost all grassy's I have seen have been chilling on bottom and/or tucked back in holes/cracks.

Internally it is super easy to tell. Look at the first gill raker. You can really tell the difference there.

Check out the attached little pic I took on my phone of the DFG Rockfish ID poster I have on my wall at work. It is really easy to see in real life as well!

Check out the attached pic of fuzz's that really shows the size and meatiness of a grassy's pectoral fins vs the pic of a kelpy I took earlier this year...huge difference in the fins...

Hope this helps and congrats on a fun day!!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Cool fish. I was out in my kayak close to your location and heard some snorkelers shouting about something. Maybe one was you. :smt002
