Spearfishing and commercial fishing were banned at the Breakwater and the rest of Cannery Row (the Edward F. Ricketts Conservation area).

Do they have the close date? Might have to do some harvesting before it closes. I have just about everything to start spearfishing.

Are you sure, John?  I did not hear any talk of imposing a spear fishing ban.  Yeah, there will be a large SMR south of Lovers, but Otter and Coral St will still be open.........as will all of North and East edge of Carmel Bay.

I hope to join y'all one of these days.  I'm getting the diving part down.....now I just have to find some fish!

i am going to look for the article i found about this, it was from a report given by someone who was there as well and the reason being was that Monterey already had a city ord. at the breakwater for no spearguns or something. let me see if i can find it.

aaah, hee it is:

http://lumigenic.com/mlpa/

the 4th paragraph down says  :

Spearfishing and commercial fishing were banned at the Breakwater and the rest of Cannery Row (the Edward F. Ricketts Conservation area). Moving westward, the tiny marine reserve fronting the Hopkins Marine Station (just west of the famous Aquarium) was expanded modestly to stretch as far as Lovers' Point.

this is a crock of horse sh*t:  "They called upon the City of Monterey to hold future hearings on the issue of fishing from the Breakwater, where diver safety is compromised by frequent hooking incidents."

what a bunch of liars, when was the last time you heard of someone getting hooked diving anywhere in monterrey? i have never heard of this even occuring.

I need to read with more attention to detail.  Thank you for your persistence.  You are right, John

There was SUCH heavy lobbying to ban spearfishing everywhere that I missed that it was being banned here.

Who wants to fish at the breakwater anyway, with 100 bubble blowers bumbling around down there on any given weekend, there's little to catch.

Scuba classes often do training in the sandy area just off the breakwater jetty.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

actually, the area from breakwater to lovers point is some of the best places for fish. often this area is the first of the year to get halibut in really shallow, the bottomfish population is healthy and this is one of the few places one can get calico bass as well in the monterey bay.

some of the largest lings i have seen live in the area between the aquarium and lovers point which will now be off for spearos.

the calicos which group around mcabee beach are also off limits as well.

as for hook and line fishing, those folks will still enjoy this area but this place had some of the best spearfishing as far as i have seen in the area.

i agree with keeping the breakwater off to spearos because a lot of scuba divers get their feet wet in salt water for the first time there, a lot of spearos would agree on this spot but the area south to lovers point is a real shame.

it was seen to be coming and we all had a feeling though. i just dont understand the part about them saying divers getting hooked and all. the number of spearfishermen compared to hook and line fishermen are far fewer in this area as well.

i guess his will help to motivate us to find new grounds.
