Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone else had similar experience as me where a bug went deep into the ear and causing pain by digging into the ear drum. I was having a good time bass fishing the other day and a small grasshopper made himself into my ear canal and caused severe pain every couple of seconds. Luckly my buddy was able pull it out with his pliers but it was pretty painful experience for over 5 mins. Bug in ear at 7:30 mark in the video below if you want to skip.

British explorer John Hanning Speke developed severe medical problems in 1858 during an expedition in Africa after a beetle crawled in his ear and started gnawing on his eardrum.  Some of those problems may have been caused  by his vigorous efforts to remove the beetle with a knife.

Wow. I guess that would be another advantage of the mirage drive. Being able to nurse your head while getting to help. That did look painful. Closes I had was what I assume was a yellow jacket or some type of wasp(never got to see it) hit me in my neck while on my sport bike and drop into my jacket and shirt and proceed to sting me six times while I'm riding down the Berkeley hills. I finally pull over, jump off the bike and proceed to beat on myself all over my jacket King Kong style. Good times! Or at least very memorable.

That happened to a mail carrier I knew.
Came in off the street saying something flew into his ear. Next thing we knew he started screaming bloody murder.
Glad it worked out.
Note to self; tweezers in the first aid kit.

I wonder if trying to fill your ear canal with water in that situation would help or make things worse. Kind of trying to suffocate or drive whatever may be in your ear out.🤔

When my wife was on a coast-to-coast bike trip, she had a beetle fly up her nose.  She said she saw it flying in front of her, and then it came curving towards her like an anti-aircraft missile and Boink! Went right into her nostril.  She went to an emergency room and had it pulled and washed out.

I met a deckhand on a tuna sport fishing trip out of Kailua Kona who had a cockroach fly into his ear well out at sea. By the time they came into port he was in agony and had to go to the urgent care clinic to get it removed. Needless to say, he immediately and permanently acquired the nickname "Roach". Also needless to say, nobody believed how he got the nickname.  :smt005

It seems like bug in ear causing pain does happen time to time.

Yes it was a good trip.

I hope the grasshopper didn't gnaw on mine too much 😝

I try to show the clip to my wife but she couldn't watch it 😃

I can totally picture the "king kong style."

I know what he went through for sure.

Drowning the grasshopper was my buddy's next plan if he couldn't pull it out.

Did it cause pain?

At Sick Call on separate occasions I pulled insects from Marines stationed at the Marine Barracks at NAS Alameda, one had a big black fly in his ear .The other an earwig.
I did find on google that spiders, flies and othet tiny bugs in ear but none of them mentioned pain. Did they experience pain too?
