small bass lake report

Went out to a small bass pond in the foothills east of Modesto with My wife and new-to-kayak fishing buddy Patrick on the way up to a duck-drop with Randall (Bigfoot).  The fis were all over the topwater, but I am still learning how to use a baitcasting rod, so I spend most of the day untangling backlashed spectra...(my reel with Mono was at the other house this weekend...)  Chryss missed 2 fish due to the trout rod she was using being a bit too soft to set the hook.  Patrick caught about a dozen fish from 12 to 17 inches, and I had only one hit, the bass pictured below.  I think it is about 19 inches, but will tape the rod when we get back up to Sac for verification

Can't wait to be moved so we can fish up Chico way with Bigfoot and crew, Thanks for giving the ducks a good home, it was good meeting you and your sun...Lets fish

I feel your pain! I did the same thing when I drifted the Russian River not long ago. I finally anchored and just kept practicing casting...it's all in the thumb!

I also look forward to seeing Chryss's picture on the Fisherwomen of NCKA thread!

OMG!!! That is so awesome that you get to fish with your dog. 

I tried paddling with my lab retriever but he kept going overboard chasing after ducks.  Now he's 60 lbs and just won't sit in the tankwell of the adventure.   .

So glad the ducks fared well    Hoppys is very good, but since it's within walking distance of the appt, I am going to be very careful about going there (or I'll grow fatter)...

Sam is actually a kayak celebrity, Her mug in a yak has been in the Fresno Bee and Kayak Fisherman Mag.  She loves it when I catch something, but the fish are too scary to look at 

I got tired of tangle every time I went with a different weight bait.
I went back to a spinning reel and am VERY pleased I did.

I may have to do that, but I'm going to give this a good try for a bit.  I have never found a medium weight spinning rod I liked, and I really like the action of the casting rod, it did a great job of horsing the bass out of the tulles.
