I read the letters but it seems that all the kayak fishing done is in the south of SF...are there any spot north of SF (lake or ocean ) that norcal anglers venture out into?

Sure there are a ton! Clearlake, Lake Mendocino, Lake Sonoma, Russian River on the freshwater side. Duxbury, Still Water cove, Elk, Tomales, Bodega Bay and others on the salt side. I am sure I am missing a ton, I am one of those scruffy south of the gate guys  :smt003

Where are you located?

I have never yakked in the Napa River, but I would imagine you could pull some fish out of it. Maybe where it meets the San Pablo Bay?

Allan,

There is a fairly large contingent of kayak anglers "north of the gate".  Look for fishing reports by Mickfish, SCWAfish, KzReelRods, H20Spider, Mahi Mahi among others.  I try and post when I go out, but that hasn't happened much this past year.

There is also a North of SF tournament for striped bass happening on May 12 in Lake Mendocino and a bunch of us (hopefully including myself) will be there.

China Camp, Brickyard, San Quentin, Paradise - all in Marin and an easy drive for you and great places to start out in the salt.  Also Muir Beach for Salmon, etc.  And the Delta's not too far for you.  Do a search on this site for launches.

Mendo is a great safe place to learn how to juggle gear etc., and you just might catch something pretty good! Me, Mahi, and Kickinbass are there pretty much everyweekend when the stripers are on.

hightide, some like to launch at bolinas beach which is about 15 minutes up the road from stinson (map it graphically and be careful not to miss the unmarked turns), and then paddle out to dux buoy (~3 mi).  you can also try to get out to Pt Reyes from the Pt Reyes lifeboat house ramp (south of the lighthouse), but i am not sure if you're supposed to (technically allowed) or not.  I did that before, landed to a big catered seal rescue release party, but the people there from rescue were cool and gave no grief.

there are posts here from last year about both places.

yes, muir would be an option too... when they show up that close.

I suspect we'll get out up there more this year than last year - supposed to be a big year due to the layover of 2006 spawners taking an extra year in the big pond!

see ya on the water sometime!

hightide,
I live in Benicia and fish Bodega Bay at times.  I had a couple of good Salmon days there last summer.  I'll be trying it again when the reports look better, so if you want to hookup just post your intentions.

you can also try to get out to Pt Reyes from the Pt Reyes lifeboat house ramp (south of the lighthouse)

This is where the motherlode of salmon is now, supposedly.  A huge swath of 5-8 lbs with some teens mixed in.  Hungry and munching on straight bait.  You could possibly even mooch anchovies.  Boats are taking fast easy limits, past 3 days in a row.
