I'm fortunate enough to be able to go to Hawaii this Sunday for the next week. Took me 34 years to finally get over there but, I'm looking forward to it all the same.  :smt001
I doubt I will want to pay whatever it would cost to get my poles over there so I will have to buy a "knock around" pole when I get there. But my question is, do any of you NCKA folks have experience with getting your line wet from shore over there?
I would love to be able to get a wide array of fishing in on light to medium spinning gear just to take the edge off of wanting to go fishing non stop over there but I don't know where to start. Literally any advice is greatly appreciated or I will just have to default to the bare basics of surf fishing, or something of the sort.

Thanks for taking the time to read this everyone...

I'm going in July. There is a well known kayak fishing guide in Kihei but he is asking $575 for a six hour tour. I'm considering this trip

There are some party boat trips that aren't too expensive.

I have heard that fly fish for bonefish is quite good right off Kihei

Hey Bruddah,
That kayak fishing deal looks pretty good.
If you catch an Uku and Nabeta, they are some of the best tasting bottom fish anywhere. Not a lot of people have eaten a Nabeta, but to me growing in Hawaii, that is one of the all time best fish I've ever eaten. They are not that big, but da best!!
Uku's if they are around, can get pretty big and one of the best fish all time for fishing. If you hook an uku, they will dive for the rocks big time, so you gotta pull it off the bottom fast.
Some of the pelagic predators like the Papio-small Jack Trevally and  Ono/Wahoo put up a great fight and are really good eating. Ono sashimi is to die for.
You can also go very low tech. I have caught Papio and Oio/Bonefish with a very simple 3-way jig using frozen squid for bait.
Low tech spinner w/40# braid. Just cast it out and wait for something to bite. It's amazing what kinds of fish you can pull up with squid!!
Also, you might want to try spearfishing. Go in the water in the early morning with snorkeling gear and buy a simple Hawaiian sling. It is a one piece aluminum, 3 prong spear with surgical tubing.
They is a huge variety of shallow water reef fish, most of them are not worth spearing. One of best tasting is Yellow eye Koke-spotted Surgeonfish. It is the only surgeonfish with yellow eyes and if you are diving around reefs they really stand out.'You cannot catch Kole by hook, as they only eat limu/seaweed. Even though they are small, like the Nabeta, one of the best tasting. When you fry Koke the oil turns orange colored from the oil in the Kole!!
By the way, Oio/Bonefish is not that great for eating.
When I'm back in Hawaii, I try to get in the water as often as I can.
I'm sure you will have a great time!!
Aloha,
da Bruddah

At the Kihei whale museum there is a beach to the right.  A sand path will lead you there.  You can park in the parking lot towards the beach in public parking.  Early, I forget what time the gate opens.  I fished on the outside of the wall that is built to create a pond.  You cannot fish on the wall.  I caught my bait and sent it out farther hoping for an Ulua to no avail.  Caught plenty live bait and also used squid.  The squid was at Food 4 Less.  There is a fishing section in the CVS for tackle.   Ulua beach I also fished with squid, there is a rock towards the south end of the beach that I fished off, away from the tourists.  Ulua beach is in Wailea.  Caught a needlefish.  Long and odd. Those are two spots.  Ulua beach is quite touristy so just haul your gear and smile.  I liked hauling fishing gear around in the tourist zone, it seemed kinda different.  Look for fisherman, make friends, depending on the fisherman and fish...also, Da Bruddah knows...oh, and also I stay suckin' jealous... :smt006

Hey thanks guys. I'm just now getting back to view this post unfortunately. I brought my reels but no poles. I didn't want to pay some absurd amount to get them on the plane. I will just pay money and buy local and give my poke to a younger local kid. Maybe get the next wave of fishermen cultivated.
Yeah I spoke to some locals and they essentially mirrored what was said by you folks.
They kept saying "go to Wal-Mart by the airport" I kept yelling them "I want to buy local..." it was at that point they stopped holding me at arm's length as a tourist and started telling me more specific spots, setups, and what set up send to catch what.

I went into this trip blind really, but with just a little direction and a good attitude...that seemed to get me all I needed.
Thanks guys
