i've only had one instance where a fish swam under the boat and tangled both of my downrigger lines. It was a total pain in the ass, and because of that I only fish one downrigger now. So if I hook a big fish i could pull my downrigger line up

+1 Unless the fish is really hot and there isn't a chance to bring the ball up. I had a good sized salmon wrap the line in bodega and had a choice of losing the fish or cutting the DR line and losing the weight -- made the wrong choice and it came unbuttoned as I tried to untangle the lines.

Here's a recent video of a salmon making a run towards the line when it was near the yak. Not sure if it would have tangled, but I didn't have to find out.

Is that an AI? How do you mount your downrigger?

I have a 2x6 that sits above the rear AI aka mount and use a scotty portable bracket as the base for the scotty 1060. A couple of extra holes were drilled in the bracket so that the DR can be ~45 degrees from the yak. It has worked well for the past 4-5 years and I can even run a 8# ball.

With trout I'm sure you can control them enough to keep em out of your hanging line most of the time, but with salmon I wouldn't leave the line down. More often than not  they make a lap or two or three around the boat before landing them. They are too precious to loose...
