For those of you that have owned older Honda and Acura vehicles, I'm sure some of you may have dealt with the notorious transmission issue.

My mom's 2003 Acura TL just broke down today and the mechanic is saying it is the transmission and asking $2500 to replace or he will give us $2500 to just sell it to him as is.  This car is a 2003 but only has 75K miles on it and has been extremely well taken care of, interior is 9/10, exterior is 9/10.  Virtually nobody has sat in the back seat so the leather is 10/10.

I will start calling around tomorrow, but just wanted to see if anyone else has done a Honda/Acura transmission replacement and what you paid.  My mom is debating whether she should repair or just sell it.  I'm kind of leaning towards having her sell it but want to make sure the amount she is being offered is reasonable.

I use to own one, dunno bout paying 2500 for an transmission install. That's almost the price of the vehicle. $1500 used Trans + install.

It certainly sounds like it is worth keeping, provided the price point for the replacement is reasonable enough.

I mean, what would it cost for a comparable condition vehicle, that mileage, etc. I know you know this, I'm just workin through the steps I would take to find my break *number*

If you replace the transmission make sure its a reputable rebuild or new replacement which corrects the original defects. Then it will be worth the repair. Sounds like its worth keeping.

This.  Not even an OEM one cost that much.  PM me, I have a shop that you can check out.  A 2003 should still be somewhat common.

Fix, $2500.00 is about right, if done by someone reputable. Buy the extended warranty too... Lots of driving left in that TL :smt006
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

So just a little update.  The guy that works for my mechanic decided he didn't want to pay $2500 anymore and tried to lowball me to $1800.  Declined the offer and I drove the Acura from the mechanic back to my house so I can clean it up a bit and sell it.  I did notice the engine light was on, but couldn't get the tranny to slip during the drive home at all.

Posted it on CL for $3000, had about 30 offers during the weekend I was at GS11.  Met with first couple that contacted me and sold the car within 10 minutes last night.  Easiest craigslist sale ever!   :smt005

I actually did want to fix and keep the car since it has so much life left, but I just didn't want my mom to get stuck on the road again so I felt better about getting her a new car.
Thanks for all your input everyone...NCKA rocks!
