Bluefin tuna are sometimes caught within 3 miles of shore in Monterey Bay. Not every year, though, and I understand it takes a lot of searching to find them and stay on them.

But I don't think there has ever been a confirmed tuna catch from a kayak.

Yeah, kayakers have scored bonito in Monterey Bay and a few other spots.

Most years we don't even see Bonito around here.  If you really want to target tuna and bonito around here, you need to keep abreast of the reports, have some on the water buddies willing to call you in, and be able to move on them at a moments notice.  It's a here today, gone today, sort of thing ...

With the "blob" of warm water moving on and the usual strong winds and upwelling returning the the CA coastline, there may not be any bonito within range this year.
