I used a VA loan when I got out of the military and ended up going with a Calvet loan about six months ago.  Not sure about the reg va loans but the Calvet loan had to be used with a 25 year window.   We got a good rate but they tacked on thousands of dollars because I had previously used it.  I have also used regular loans on past purchases that were better at that time.

Contact someone who does both types of loans and have them run the actual  numbers to see if there are benefits or savings.

1st I am not a loan officer so I will not make a penny on this but I love to point you to the right place.
CALVET loans are done only by CALVET, I would Not use them at this time or in the recent 10 years because their rates are about 1% higher then regular VA.
2nd most lender can do a VA loan, not many have experience with them.
3rd, as for VA or CALVET you may want to know that if there was any disability they will waive the funding fee ( around 2% of the sales price ) and many other fees that go along with the sale or refinance.
I am a Realtor and have been doing this since January 1991, BRE 01104621 . ( have to disclose that per law )
Call me so I can refer you to a lender that will take care of you.
