Hi All,

Currently debating a new wetsuit.  I'm thinking about buying a 7mm for ab diving that comes as a two piece.  Will the bottom farmer john be too much for norcal kayak fishing?

Alternatively I can buy an NRS 3mm farmer for the kayak, but I'd prefer to kill two birds...

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

IMO the 7mm is too bulky for kayaking all day.  I tried this before but end up bought a 3mm for kayaking.

you have to buy the 7 for ab diving anyway. See how it works for you for fishing and if you don't care for it then go with a thinner suit for fishing.

I use a 7 for fishing but then again that's my preference.

Dress for immersion.  I either wear my complete wetsuit or an immersion suit.  But never just a farmer John.  When the water is 49 degrees you can shock your body and go hypothermic pretty quick even if part of your body is covered.

I still see people kayaking in the ocean with shorts on so please don't listen to them.

If you buy a new 7mm and try to fish in it you may get overheated but if you are a diver you can just jump in to cool off or let some water in. But after you use it for awhile it will be more flexible and may even compress to a 5 mil equivalent.

I save my old suits for warmer days or when I dive so cal.

5-7mm for diving. Drysuit for fishing.

I'm not sure if you're using a two piece wetsuit for diving (7mm farmer john plus a 7mm top) but if that's what you're planning, using the 7mm farmer john and a 3/4 top would work when fishing.

I wear a 7mm FJ (which could be part of your ab suit) with a stretchy 2mm longsleeve high neck jacket (adds some cost). like this one. Allows good mobility in the arms and adds safety in case you spend some time in some cold water.

Lots of opinions on this question,

If I'll be diving that day I wear my two piece diving suit. If its just H/L fishing I've got an Oneil zip up jacket that I pair with either my 7mm dive bottoms or for warmer days the bottom I cut off from an old surfing wetsuit - so that's 3 or 4 mm.

Cheers,
Brad

7mm too thick

Not if you are in (not on) the water for 4+ hours.

I can't paddle in a wetsuit top. I wouldn't buy farmer johns again unless I was planning on using it for paddling without the top.
