I have be fishing for a few years now and it is time that I learn how to service the inside of the real. Is there anyone who lives on the peninsula who has experience and would be willing to show me how to do it. That way my wife wouldn't laugh at me and I would feel  like more of a man. Plus I hate paying for something that I could do if I knew how.

I learned a lot by watching Youtube videos by searching for things like 'shimano reel maintenance'.  Some of them were done by the people that do the repairs at Shimano.  Got a lot of good tips on just the general cleaning of the reel, line counter drive, spools, etc.

Same here; youtube is a boon.
A few suggestions:
  • Spread a towel over your work surface to keep screws and bits from rolling around and getting lost.
  • Find a diagram of all the parts in your manual. I had good results searching for my model number in google images.
  • Take pictures of the reel as you disassemble it. This may be crucial in getting it back together

Alan Tani has some incredible instructional info online.  I followed his detailed description to replace the drag washers and clean my Shimano Tekota reels.

+1 On the parts diagram. I know abu Garcia list the schematics of most if not all their reels on their site, I'm sure other manufacturers do too. That's the best piece of info you can have!

Piss on it, then squirt it with Deep Creep. Crack a beer, chug it, piss on it again, hose it off with water. Worked fine for me for YEARS. Once it seizes, sell it on eBay username polepole.

YouTube and Alantani.... not much too it reel lube, grease and new drag washers. The only ones I'd consider sending off is a shimano baitrunner. Those are complex.

If it's a spinning reel good luck those damn things. Are hard to service.  Baitcaster are very easy to work with. Alan Tani is definitely the place to start.
