If I had to guess I'd say insert bass into mouth of recently caught pike, drill hole in ice, insert fish into hole and wait for ice to refreeze around them.

Pike tries to eat a bass and it chokes and dies. Pike is bigger than the bass so the bass is above the waterline due to the weight of the pike pulling it downward. They float along the surface and freeze.

Q: Can I fish in a frozen over river or lake with a chainsaw?

A:  Chainsaws are not legal in inland waters at all anywhere. Chainsaws can only be used under the authority of a Scientific Collecting Permit and these are issued only for bona fide research, education or collection for approved public display purposes.  In addition, under a Scientific Collecting Permit, the chainsaw must be an electric saw.  Internal combustion powered chainsaws contain gasoline and oil. These substances contain petroleum and are specifically prohibited by law to be deposited or introduced into the waters of the state (Fish and Game Code, section 5650).  Waters of the state include frozen waters in the form of ice.

Every now and then you will see a predator fish frozen in the ice while ice fishing in MN.

When a fish is swimming along just below the ice a Pike, Muskie or Walleye will ambush from below. When this happens and the ice is thin enough it can break through the ice, but get a gill or fin trapped on an edge. The ice quickly freezes filling the hole (easy to do in -30) trapping both fish.

It can also happen when a predator bites off more than it can chew, chokes and floats along just under the ice. When it happens to move into a hole (usually cut by an ice fisherman) it will become padge in that open space until it freezes close trapping the fish in the ice.

A chainsaw can be used to cut blocks of ice from the water, but the preferred method is to use an Ice Agur. This of course depends on the state and country regulations. I've seen many people ice fishing after cutting a hole with a chainsaw in from of DNR.
