I understand what you're going for Marmite but unfortunately it's going to be too difficult if everyone puts in such a detailed idea. I usually have clients come up with a short (5-6) word list if they can't make up their minds as to what the concept should be. I know it sounds ridiculously over simplified but that's exactly what good design is.

I was starting this poll to hopefully get our ideas flowing in the right direction. I don't have any rank on this site so none of what I put up is official but I wanted to lend a hand since this is my specialty.

So if this poll isn't working for everyone I propose we brainstorm about 5 word lists (5 words in each) and then have a poll to see which word list is most popular.
Does that sound good?

(Don't want to hijack this thread.) But in my former life, I lived on a ship for 5 years and fished from Athens Greece to New Zealand, Fijii (BIG Ulua!) and American Samoa. Was Docked in Honolulu for over a year--never was good fishing here.

Not vacation time. I'm here just covering family obligations--prewedding dinner, wedding dinner, post wedding dinner.  I'm more interested in reading about where the salmon are and wondering who'll be hooking up when I return.

Great trout Joel!

Wow! Leave a void and someone will fill it!  :smt003

I am letting this run its course on purpose. I don't do details very well. Let's not get too hung up on the printer. I think I can make most if not all the designs work. Although I would like (note not require) that there be a 1 color version as well.

Thanks for all the effort everyone is putting into this. I really appreciate it. We are going to have a great logo!

Just a comment from an interloper, but why the human skull and cross bones? Fishers aren't pirates and, despite the glorification in film and literature, pirates were (still are) brutal criminals. If anything it should be a fish skeleton given we don't perform C&R as much as we keep them :smt003 (just kidding!)

If we want something edgy, then skull and cross bones is tired--they've been doing that on the high seas since 1600s and it's not novel any more. And I won't wear any logo that risks lumping me in with those SoCal weenies  :smt013. (friendly competition trash talk since I'll be fishing some of the Plastic Navy Saltwater Bass Tourney Trail this year--I hope).

I liked the New England graphic--abstract but captured the spirit and energy of kayak fishing in a very simplistic yet powerful fashion. Clean lines and distinctive. Maybe we could take it up a notch with a breaking wave (those of you going to Elk might soon enough relate) since our NorCal ocean is a bit more of a challenge than SoCal's :smt004

Frankly, it's pretty hard to capture it all in one graphic so I'll leave it to those of you far more equipped for creative expression that than I. Great creativity and passion so far.

And this all makes me forget about Joel's Moby Dick of a Trout. Man that was HUGE. :smt007

IMO: NCKA is all about camaraderie.....fishing is second.

examples...

when James (kayakjames) kayak was stolen days after he bought it from Sean, NCKA chipped in and bought him a new kayak...even Sean gave him the cheap cost price of a new Cobra FND just to show his support.....

when Hurricane Katrina did it's damage, NCKA donated funds via fishing derby at Mendo....

when Coastide fishing needed help and support ....NCKA raised money via Elk derby...

when the town on Elk needed money for the restoration of their community center, NCKA raised money via Elk derby....

when the Striped Bass Association needed money to help stock Lake Mendocino, NCKA raised money via Bendo at Mendo.....

when brother Frank had a mishap at Bean Hollow, NCKA was supportive and thankful that Frank (and friend) lived to tell and share their experience and that others may learn from it.

when our brother Steve/Chef was fighting cancer, NCKA was there to help till the very end....Rest in Peace Steve!

I thinks it's safe to say that NCKA does more than "fish reports"  :smt002

 anyway, here's another design suggestion:

Seeing a buddy having a great day and being able to capture the moment with a  photo taken by another friend....priceless :smt002

Surfing Marmot, you were thinking of something like this perhaps...

This is probably the most famous Japanese woodblock print out there by the master Hokusai.  As such we probably couldn't use it as out logo, but it is inspiring.

Mooch.. I think the Elk shirt this year might have a similar design with Chef/Jade Pirate.

I love that print Bsteves, I have attempted to photoshop a logo out of it at least a dozen times. I can never get anything that looks remotely good.

I think this is a great thread and probably shoulda precluded the sticky.  Not to discount what work has already been submitted but I think having a chance to get everyone's ideas together will create a better base with which to start designing.

Without a doubt, kykfishing is at the extreme end of the angling spectrum.  Not quite the craziest but certainly not the norm.  It takes a certain spirit of adventure, physical and mental toughness to get the job done, this logo should represent that.  We are not trying to appeal to the masses, anybody that takes the time to find the site will undoubtedly already have that ounce of "madness."  And thats the attitude this logo should embody.

Are we extending the submit date?

We can certainly extend the date. How does mid May 1st sound? I would like to have time to get stuff printed for the HMB derby in June.

SKy how would you feel if we took all yours into a separate poll and then the top 2 would move on to the finals? Then you could send me the production ready files for the 2 that make the finals?

Sounds good, all the shirts shipped yesterday so I should get them in a few days. I will setup the poll sometime today to get it rolling.

Thanks again Sky!
