Whiskytown 3/24-3/25

We  arrived @ Whiskeytown  Oak Bottom campground around 4PM  Sat after winning the Lacrosse game 6-2 against Redding (10 miles from WT.) We set-up camp and decided that with the wind and fact that the campsite was hundred’s of yards from the water to wait and fish in the morning. Campfire Chile, Smores and some Merlot= $20.00. 5 hours of one-on-one shooting bull with my Son Ty (16) = Priceless!! We awoke to cloud’s, mist and wind thought we were on the coast. Loaded up camp and moved to Whiskeytown launch where there were reports of salmon hitting on top. Unloaded Yaks to discover my (Bendo at Mendo II Raffle won) Harmony Seat was sitting in my garage . We launched at 8:30am and headed towards the 299 bridge trolling  Apexs and Kastmasters . It wasn’t long before I headed for shore and bank fished while Ty continued trolling in his Sit-nside. Between the two of us we tried everything for nadda. Loaded up and moved to the Dam tried the same with the same results. We started to load up around 4PM when Ty noticed a fish break water off a point and walked over and fly lined a worm out to an immediate hook up. The fight was on and when I saw a 24”+ fish break the surface I grabbed the net and headed over. By the time I got to Ty he was holding up a FAT  Squawfish %&#^^*% . Ty saved us from a Skunk, Out fished me, Again, and won his LaX  game. Not a bad trip but I think I should have listened to Benfishin and gone to Shasta. AND remembered  my Seat.

Congrats Ty......for winning the Lacrosse game and beating dad to a fish....again!  But in the end, you should thank him for taking the time to hang out with ya  Moments like this is PRICELESS

Congrats on the win.  Sounds like a fun trip. What's a squawfish look like? Edible?

 No not from what I hear but then again It all depends on how hungry one is. They kind of look like a bass/trout from the top and a x between a sucker and a carp from the side.

 

Thanks for the pic bigfoot. I guess a fish is a fish when you're trying to avoid the skunk.  Good going though.

I used to go there on summer for snorkel.  It gets nice & hot there.  I remember seen some small fish in the coves, but the lake was not much of fishing tho...

you got the right priorities going, one-on-one time,camping,fishing and being together to enjoy it all.
