I woke up at 5am to pee and heard running water in the kitchen.  I thought it was the dog drinking so I walked into the kitchen to check him out.  My first step was into some standing water.  Turned out to be the water dispenser on the fridge door that was on full dispense mode.  None of the commands on the panel would respond and eventually it gave an error message.  The tab to press down was not engaged or stuck.  I shut the water off in the pipe leading to the fridge as well as unplugged the fridge.  Before unplugging it I noticed the corner closest to the ice maker was heating up, so much so that when I open the door I can see a wisp of steam rise.  It was also very hot to the touch.  Plugged it back in after a few minutes and it seemed to be working with the freezer reaching -2 and fridge at 39 pretty quickly.  Later in the afternoon, I turned the water back on and no more leaks.  But as I get ready for bed, I'm a little nervous if I don't catch another malfunction leak quickly.  I had a repair service scheduled, but I cancelled as I didn't think they'd be much help since everything is working again.

Any ideas on what could've caused it?

Unplug that sob and save yourself the possibility of your place burning down.

Sell it on craigslist and let the next poor bastard deal with it.

Actually, that is the reason I don't buy stuff like this on craigslist; you never know what the last did and the real reason they are selling it.

In the meantime, consider placing a leak detector alarm.  Here's a link.  I got 5 of 'em placed around; fridge, washer, dishwasher, water heater and guest bathroom which is rarely used.

I agree with others, I'd get it checked out or sell it as is.  The water leaking sounds like the least of your problems, that overheating thing sounds scary.

Is it the side by side french door style or the style with freezer on bottom?   I can tell you from experience and other research that the french door style freezer/fridge sucks due to a horrible design.  They just look nice, but suck.

I've heard less issues with the bottom freezer styles but guess what style I see a ton of stacked/returned at the Samsung warehouses?  The french door style fridges!  I made the stupid mistake of buying one of these, but never again will I buy another one.

I'm sure Howard will chime in shortly about how much he hates his.   :smt044

Jerry, I bought those leak detectors and they are on their way.

smoke, it's the French door model.  It was here when we moved in.  We never liked it.  It's huge as in deep and it's hard for my wife or kids to reach into the back.  I drink from the tap so never really used the water or ice maker.

We've been talking about a kitchen remodel, maybe this will speed that decision up.

Nate

my dispenser wouldn't stop dispensing water, but i fixed it by changing out the solenoid diverter valve (i think that's what is called)... but mine WAS NOT a samsung.

Just an FYI, unless you REALLY need and use it, skip the water dispenser and ice maker.  The extra space in my refer allows me to fit a $2 bag of ice to keep on hand and the whole unit was a lot less expensive.

My son had a Samsung Fridge that had some sort of freezer defrost element go wacky.  Got on line and figured it out, ordered the parts, got it fixed for around $50 only to have the same thing happen.  Twice...

So much for Samsung!!

Maybe do some research and see if this is a known problem.  I had my current fridge go snakey on the freezer temps.  Found out it's a known problem and just what to say when I called GE to get them to send me what would have been a $250 circuit board for free.  So far, 3 circuit boards, all with different revision #'s, so they are still working out the problems!!  I keep a spare fridge in the garage so I don't loose food between circuit boards.  So far, so good.

That's exactly the route I'm going on the next purchase, no water or ice maker and no where as deep as this monster.

My mom has a Samsung side-by-side. Biggest POS, PITA ever. As I was fixing the ice build up around the freezer fan last week (has to be done every 2-3 months and is a total pain), I told her that I'd buy her a new fridge if she'd let me push it off the back porch stairs. Feel your pain with this one.

This is one of the most notorious issues with those side by side fridges made by Samsung!!  If its not the fan, its the circuit board.  PITA regardless!

My mom has already gone through one circuit board and one fan assembly in the two years that she's had it. I've taken the rear freezer panel off of it so many times that half the screws are nearly stripped. Insanely frustrating.
