Me and a buddy are thinking of hopping in the car tomorrow and going down for a few weeks.

Anyone know if the protests and gas mess has cleared up? Hwy 1 safe and open? Oh and vis in he sea of Cortez ? YT wahoo yet?

Also any other advice. Just winging it probably camping a lot. Once we get halfway down are we going to be semi safe while out in the sticks or is there a high chance of bandito robbery stuff?

Thanks.

Largest threat of banditos is in the tourist areas, border zone, Cabo, tourist destinations.  I believe the gas issues were on the mainland.  I'd advise getting your Mexican fishing license.  Last June we were visited by the Mexican Marines several times.  They are actively searching for the totoaba poachers in the northern half of the Sea of Cortez.  Coca-Cola and coffee buys a lot of good well.

Baja Sur is safe. Cabo San Lucas, San Jose Del Cabo, Pescadero, La Paz, Los Barrilles, Todos Santos....all safe.

EastCape...safe.

I know a guy formerly of Team 3 guy that might be a resource if you want the real skinny.  He specializes in executive protection in Mexico/LatAm.  if i ever got into deep salsa south of the border, "Gonzo" would be the first person I'd call (if I could call...).  He was 68Whiskey Army before he re-enlisted in the naval service and became a frogman.  PM me if you want his contact.

->TOURIST VISA PRICE INCREASE<-

We've verified from our Mexico Government sources that the FMM Tourist Visa has had a rate increase. The increase went from 390 pesos to 500 pesos or from $19.50 US Dollars to $25 US Dollars. We still offer these FMM Tourist Visa's to you at cost ($5 service fee) but you still have to have them activated at the border.
 Always put 180 days in the area of how long you will be staying. This is so you don't have to purchase another Visa within the next 6 months.

Mexican Government has increased their fuel prices

Effective January 1, 2017, Pemex has raised the nationwide average price of both grades of gasoline and diesel dramatically:
1. A liter of Magna (regular) will rise 14.2% from the current $13.98 pesos ($2.55/gallon) to $15.99 pesos. ($2.92 per gallon)
2. A liter of Premium (Rojo) will jump 20.1% from $14.81 ($2.70 per gallon) to $17.79 pesos per liter. ($3.24 per gallon)
3. A liter of Diesel will rise 16.5% from $14.63 ($2.67 a gallon) to $17.05. ($3.11 per gallon) Due to these increases, it has sparked protests at some Pemex fuel locations as well as road closures and protests at some federal highways.
