I launched at Port of Sacramento Barge Canal for the first time yesterday. Pretty interesting spot. I trolled for salmon all the way down to the Old Dominion Freight Line before being told that the salmon are actually the other direction at the lock (local knowledge).

Saw one kayak angler who caught an undersized striper with a live minnow.

Got back to the lock and there were quite a few other kayak anglers, jumping salmon, and no one catching anything. Hahaha!

Met some good folks and had a great time. I'll definitely hit that spot again. Next time I'll do a better job of following someone who knows how that spot works.

We were out there too... One hooked and lost... one caught... jigged from 7 am till 4:30 for 2 fish. Water was still in the 60's! Keep at it when the water is flowing from the lock/ jig in the current (till your arms fall off!) just a numbers game. time and location to eventually get one...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Thanks Weimarian. I think I saw you. I was the black guy who came up around 11am in the blue Hobie. I usually go for salmon in the ocean. This was my first time going for them in the river.

What do you typically jig with? I was using a Mepps Flying C and a series of Blue Foxes.

I generally use 1-3oz  jigs (like little ocean diamond bar jigs) up down an bop the bottom each time. They will bite them. early morning when the water is cold and oxygenated seems to be a good active bite. Mostly just luck and percentage of water and probability of where fish might be (gap @ lock) Good luck and get some rowe for the stergion fishing!

Like Ron said it's just a numbers game, I fish the port a lot (I live just a couple miles down the road). I've caught more there on flying c's then jigging. But that's where the FF comes in handy. As of a week ago some of the seals have been spotted and schools of salmon have been moving. Jigging the locks is always a good place to start and when it's cold. Good luck, post a hookup next time and I'll try and meet you there.

Personally I've caught zero at the locks. Better to troll a rattle trap near the docks

I was out there Saturday too (white predator).  Trolled around and didn't start marking fish til late.  For some reason the stripers had lockjaw.  I marked a couple of big schools and dragged my a-rigs right through them and they wouldn't touch it.  Who knows.... maybe it was just one of those days.
