Not to thread-jack, but just curious why crawdads only seem to be popular as food in LA (the state, not the city), when they are common pretty much everywhere...
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Thanks for making me pull these out.  Pricey and presently have to clean up and tweak a few things, but before the water gets cold, the Marin lakes have some population

There used to be a crawdad festival in Isleton, but it got politicked out of existence. There is a commercial crawdad fishery in Calif, restricted to "moving water" meaning rivers and streams. A guy sells them at the Sunday farmers' market in Sacto. Sport fishermen can do either lakes or rivers. One of the best spots in this area is Lake Natomas, below Folsom Dam. It's flat across almost the whole bottom, and the bottom is basically cobblestones, so crayfish do really well there. This also explains the huge Brown Trout that sometimes get caught there. Now y'all got me wanting to get out and catch some...
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

Cold creek Potter Valley and talmage dam outside of Ukiah always had large ones. I used to dive for them with mask snorkel and fins and a leather glove on hot summer days and only cherry pick the big ones. reminds me of a Funny Story Tallmadge dams I'd like to share. one day diving there I found a hole in a five foot Bank of growing Moss and curiosity made me look into the hole to see what had made it and it was a male or female catfish Spawning nest with one in it. took my fin off and poked it into the hole hoping to catch it. Bam something stuck my back bam stuck in the side again it was its mate. had two hickies to prove it but no pics :smt001

Eddie! Thanks for showing us pictures of your crawdad traps.

If I get a chance this weekend I'm going to try and set mine out somewhere along the Delta.

BTW another great spot is Hell Hole Resevoir! I remember one year pulling out super good quality, bright red and large crawdads!

We really need to do a crawdad hookup!

William Land Park in Sacramento has  a few fish ponds every once in a while they  clean them out. They put a chemical in that takes out the oxygen killing all the fishes. The crayfish come to the edge of the acre or 2 pond 4 feet out in water to the edge solid crayfish. Might not be the healthiest thing to eat if the chemicals they use are toxic.

They are tasty,  nothing like old bay and butter. Seems like we all got our spots.
