Way to go guys! I'm thrilled for you David. I would have underestimated the weight too.

When you catch a fish like that right off the bat, what a great feeling.

I've never caught a fish like that on my kayak - yet. But I can say getting a big fish hookup early on in a session is amayzing, pun intended!

Thanks for the nice replies, guys.  :smt001

Jerry - it actually only felt like a bump on a rock - then it came back.  Subtle biters lately.

When that fish came to life and started sounding in shallow water I thought shit could get seriously dicey - moorings closeby in one direction and kelp near Pilot in the other.  Even if it missed all that, this fish could've towed David a ways - it was a pure muscle torpedo.  Luckily it just kept going down, and David kept towing it back up as I scrambled to get in position to net it.

So David brings it back up the 2nd or 3rd time with me chasing to get in position, and Domenic's keeping his distance on the perimeter but ready to help us.  This affords me a great couple of looks at this fish, and while David's full attention was on the runs and his recoveries, I look at Domenic when I know David can't see me and I'm mouthing "IT'S HUGE!!!" and holding my arms up like a really wide touchdown!

If that fish would've come unbuttoned it would have been pretty atrocious - grown men crying scene...

Anyway, I find myself reflecting today on it, and I'm just extremely stoked that we were able to retain that fish and tell this tale.  It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than David, and I'm really proud to have been the guide.

You know I'll be back on that water ASAP to spin the Roulette Wheel again.  Season's open until early November.

Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.
