After a long day of sturgeon fishing the last thing I want to do is take all the gear off of my kayak before heading home.
After watching Eric load his directly into the back of his truck then drive off not only made me envious it got me to thinking.
My truck bed is only 6 feet long; about 7.5 with the tailgate down. No way does a 15' or 16' kayak just slide in and stay there.
I saw the bed extenders made for carrying lumber but they extend directly from the hitch and if you hit any incline at all they drag the ground.
I came up with my own design. I added trailer lights so I do not have to worry about it sticking out too far and being unsafe. Two kayaks will easily slide into the back of the truck and rest on the pads. There are tie down points for each kayak on the cross bar so securing them is a cinch. They easily come apart with the pull of one pin so I can store them in the back of the truck if I want. They will accept a pad lock if I feel like leaving it on.
Now I can rig my kayak at home, slide in into the bed and take off. I can come home just as easy. It also makes it easier for me to hop from lake to lake with no hassle.

Mike..you create the coolest stuff. I take my 10' sik more than the P13 because I like to throw it in the back of the truck. You have the right idea, "Load and Go!"

Great work there Tote.  I don't have racks for my Tundra yet so I haul the marauder in the back.  So far I haven't had any trouble...but something would definetely be a big improvement.

Tote,

How do you handle a 15' kayak by yourself? My Cobra Tourer isn't really heavy but at 15' it is difficult to manage by myself. I like your design here and I think it would help me be able to get out more often by myself. I currently have a rack for the truck but it is too difficult to load by myself. I have thought about getting a smaller kayak but it would be hard to go from the tourer to a FND or something similar.

So just guessing here but what you put the tires on the kayak before you unload it so you can get it where you want it easier. Then load it up for launch, wheel it down to the water remove wheels and paddle away?

Last question: Do you have a rough set of plans you'd care to share?

Jeff
