Southern Oregon Coast

I had to drive to Gold Beach today to testify as an "expert witness" in a trial regarding mold contamination - interesting...

Wow!  was I impressed with the structure and access along the coast from Brookings to Gold Beach.  It's 25 miles with several coves, lots of structure close to shore, several river and creek mouths...  I was driving north on 101 near the mouth of the Pistol river around 10 miles south of Gold Beach and saw a bald eagle eating something on an offshore rock very near the beach.  I parked and hoofed it across the beach to get a closer pic and it flew off with it's big silvery carcass (steelhead?) being chased and harassed by another bird or two - I got a few shots as it flew off.  Later I saw in my photos that one bird that was harassing it was an osprey and I've seen that before - like the eagle stole the osprey's meal.  The big eagle landed on another seastack very near the water's edge so I hoofed farther down the beach toward it hoping to get a better shot.  As I approached it took off and promptly dropped it's big carcass into the ocean - I thought it would circle and dive for it, but it just bee-lined out of there.  I got several more shots of it and it landed in a tree about a quarter mile away and very near 101.  The Pistol river is a very short river that flows out of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in the southern oregon coastal mountains.  Cool area.

Regarding my interest in kayaking and fishing the coast up there, I think I'll look into the regulations to see if there are rockfish/lingcod opportunities when ours is closed.  I can drive to that area in around 2-2.5 hours.  Does anyone have info on Oregon fishing seasons?
