Hi all -

I see the word 'drysuit' used when most here are describing what they wear while out on the ocean.  Are these people wearing drysuits, or paddlesuits?  I have been looking on the Kokatat site and notice that they list both, yet there is a specific 'paddling suit' labeled as an angler suit:

Can you guys help describe the differences and chime in on which one you are using?  Obviously I like the price on the paddle suits, but wonder what the drawbacks are compared to the drysuits.

Thanks!!!  :smt001

That's basically what most people use and refer to as dry suits.

Usually when I hear people refer to Paddling suits it's the ones where the top and bottom are separate.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

Always looking for new people to fish with!

Hey, Kyle.  The Supernova Angler suit is a semi-dry suit - it has a neoprene neck gasket instead of latex.  As a result, some water may leak in around the neck.

The most water that has gotten into mine so far was at most about a tablespoon of water when I went in headfirst during a self-recovery drill.

Don't know why they're calling them "paddling" suits, but I'm not their marketing/legal team.

Here's a great review:  http://canadiankayakanglers.com/kokatat-t3-super-nova-angler-dry-suit-review/

I love mine.  I started with 3 mil Farmer but after owning the Kokatat Angler Drysuit, I never went back.  It has a neoprene neck gasket that's loose fitting and cordura material from the waist down that stands up to abuse (hooks, spines etc,). The material is very breathable and keeps you dry.  Its loosely cut to accommodate layering.

Other drysuits are designed for white water with a latex neck gasket that prevent cold water from entering the suit.  We sit on top kayak fish and don't really need that feature.

Thanks for the replies Tinker, FishingAddict and RBark  :smt006.  My assumption was that most people were using, but wanted to confirm.

Like FishingAddict mentions, what makes it an 'Angler' suit is that it is reinforced in certain areas to "withstand the demands of kayak fishing".

Awesome guys! Really appreciate the responses!

They call it a paddling suit because it won't keep you 100% dry during very wet activities like whitewater kayaking.

You will be fine after self rescuing wearing a paddling suit, but some water may seep in around the neck. When you first fall in. Once you're upright and being held by your PFD, you shouldn't get any more seepage.
