@screwie Thank you, and I agree especially at the port. Unless your looking for a reaction bite watching the tides is key to success.

Also, I lost a rod and reel in the drink - newbie mistake and wasn't paying attention. It was my hiking setup had a "plusanno" telescopic Rod with a 2500 Shimano Sahara FE on it. If anybody comes across it :)

Wow, that stinks Malifunction.  Hubby and I just finished making "rod floaters" out of pool noodles and Velcro cable straps.  We went out to Folsom Lake this AM to test them.  Pretty cheap to make and certainly is better than losing them.  Hubby lost whole setup earlier this year when his kayak capsized.  Hopefully somebody finds your rod, reel.

Hey there. I enjoyed meeting and fishing with everyone.  It was a great morning out there.  I caught about 10 bass using a plastic worm.

Screwie, can you let us know about more how to make those floats?  I tried this morning but its loose. Will the Velcro hold it tight to the rod?

Hi Ronaldo.  It was great meeting you yesterday.  Unfortunately I was too stubborn to just try using plastic worms and wanted to try to catch a striper with some of the other lures that I had.

For the rod floats, just used some plastic noodles and Velcro cable ties from Lowes (I think pack of 50 of $5).  Here are some pics of what we did.  Cut the pool noodle to length.  Cut a slit down one side so that it fits over the pole, we cut off little more than 1/4 of the pool noodle to fit the pole (otherwise the pool noodle was too fat).  We had to sort of play with the sizes to make them fit right.  Shaved down the ends of the floats.  Hubby was even able to use them on the baitcaster as when we Velcro tied the pool noodles down, it really reduced the width.

Hopefully pics make sense.  We were able to color code our fishing poles now. :-). Let me know if you need more help.

Didn't make it out there yesterday but made it out there today. Fished hard from 7am until 5pm. Nothing but sinks all day. Fun ąs it kept me busy but I wish I at least hooked up into a keeper. Maybe next time...

Make sure you put some bright tape or something on them so you can see them in the water....black is too hard to see once it goes into the drink.

Good advice kokoloco!  Mine already have the pink noodles.  Hubby used the black pipe insulation (didn't want it so flashy).  He did put the grey velcro on other rod floats that we finished up today.  I'll let him know!!

Thanks Screwie for the info.  I think I got it.  I am able to get the noodles tight now.  But even though I am using the smaller diameter pool noodles they still are too big and can interfere.  What did you use to cut or shave them down?  And why don't you want to use cable ties?

I use cable ties without any problem.  I shave em down with a sharp knife if too fat......make sure to "test" them before the real thing happens.....it's a pisser to see your rod with the float material sink to the bottom.

We didn't like the cable ties because of the hard/sharp plastic.  The Velcro straps seemed to be an easier thing to use.  I did have a test one on the water with a cable tie this past Saturday.  Another thing nice about the Velcro is that if you want to take it off for whatever reason while on the water, easier to do. :-)

We (hubby) used an exacto knife to cut/shave down the pool noodles.

get the pre-slit pipe insulation from Home depot, taper the ends a little and it works perfectly. The Velcro also helps hold my drop shot weight so it doesn't swing around when Im done fishing.

Yup! Good stuff

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Oh yeah.  I forgot to mention in my posts that hubby used the pipe insulation rather than the pool noodles.  It was more stealth than my pink noodles.  Thanks for mentioning the pipe insulation Mike!!
