On Sunday, July 31, residents at Clear Lake woke up to an unpleasant discovery. Thousands of dead fish – carp, catfish, crappie, bluegill and other species – were floating in the shallow water along the shoreline. Further out, a blue-green algae bloom spread over the lake’s surface. CDFW personnel are currently following up on all potential causes of the die-off and will be testing water samples from several different points in the lake; so far, all evidence indicates that the die-off is a natural phenomenon due to the extreme water temperatures (80-88 degrees) we have seen this summer. The warm water causes the naturally-occurring cyanobacteria to multiply, or “bloom,” which in turn uses up the oxygen in the water. The warmer the water, the bigger the bloom -- and the less oxygen for the fish, which then suffocate. The cyanobacteria blooms create oxygen during the day, but they use it up overnight, so they are not adding any oxygen to the water for other aquatic species. The decomposition process even further depletes the oxygen in the water. Please note that people and pets should stay away from bloom areas, as cyanobacteria can pose health risks. Dogs can be particularly susceptible, as they will drink the water and lick their fur after going in the water.

Sunday the shallow sloughs in Clearlake Oaks looked like pea soup. Didn't look hard, didn't see dead fish, but the water looked uninvitibg to say the least.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Hate it when this happens. Remember last time it was this bad my bro lost his wedding ring in like six feet of water. Had to come back with mask & weight belt to do a recovery dive in the slimy muck. Unbelievably he found the ring......& didn't get sick!   :smt005

:smt011 Seems to go in Cycles... :smt012 Die offs happening more often during drought times. Less inflow and heat = bloom :smt009 Last big drought in the 80's was real bad. We had to collect the dead fish due to smell and health risks. Winters coming right around the corner and clear lake will recover :smt003 Gonna smell for a while though :puke:
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I fished the state park area on Monday. The fishing was good and the algae was not there. I think the direction of the wind was keeping the water circulated.
