Noob here.

I'm interested in lings, RF, stripers and halibut. Leaning towards a 7' rod. What power would be best?

Thanks.

Lt-Med or Med

Good entry level rod is a Tiger Stick.  Won't break the bank & a proven fishing stick by almost everyone on here before they upgrade to a higher end rod later.

The Ugly Stick Tiger is a great choice for a no-frills bombproof rod that will get the job done.

If you think you might venture out to chase salmon at some point, I would recommend the 7' Medium over the Medium Light. It'll handle the drag of trolling much better.

The Shimano Trivala is also a decent choice, but it doesn't work well AT ALL with monofilament line (my preferred line for salmon fishing).

Can't go wrong with either.

Thanks for the advice. I see the medium Ugly Stik Tiger has a 20-50# line rating. Would that be the line rating I should look for with other brands and not focus on the medium, medium light, etc. rating?

I like my 7 foot Medium Ugly Stik Tiger as well (with a traditional Penn reel) and it's my main Ling/RF/Cabbie/Butt pole.

Even a bit cheaper is the Shimano Saguaro.  I have a Medium-Heavy 8 foot one paired with a good spinning reel and had no problem hauling up a 18lbs halibut (it was a good fight, but I wasn't afraid that my equipment would fail).

Where do you live/work? Head to a shop any feel out different rods!

Whatever brand/product line you go for, make SURE you get the right kind of pole for the type of reel you're going to put on it!

I've got some extra casting rods for sale.

I've upgraded to some custom rods and these are my extras.

Ugly Stik Lite and Clarus are great rods and I still have another set I kept for my kids to use when they fish. I prefer casting for kayak fishing.

Get the Ugly Stik.  I like medium action.  The light action doesn't work well with the heavy jigs I use.  I ended up with some high end rods and I still use my Ugly Stik as my go to.

That's basically the idea, but make sure to pay attention to whether the rod specifies braid or mono. (For example, the line ratings given for the Shimano Trevala rods are meant for braid.)

There're really no reason for your main line to be stronger than 20-30 lb test. You simply  will not break that off on a fish. If abrasion resistance is a concern, use a heavier leader.

I like the Ugly Stick medium heavy, BWCL 2200 6'6", 12-30 line weight.  The extra length of the 7' might be nice.
