I'm trying to scheme a way to install a Fishfinder on my Hobie TI without drilling holes. Obviously the transducer cable and battery cable are the main obstacles here.
Are there any FFs out there that run on AA batteries, or batteries that live in the unit so that it's self contained? That way I can run the transducer through the scupper to the unit, keeping everything secure and simple.

Any suggestions? I know FFs have been done to death here...
Thanks,
Andrew

For my Adventure I made a water bath for the transducer and a box for the battery and placed them in the front hatch. Wiring was run out the front hatch over the rubber gasket. hatch cover was then secured. Took a piece of 1/2 irrigation pipe, maybe three feet and cut it length wise . Use marine goop and glue to hull. Run wires down it to FF. FF base can be secured on center hatch cover with three small SS screws or marine goop.. Leave enough wire slack so hatch can be opened/closed while fishing. Worked fine. Maybe a bit more water enters front hatch but they leak anyway.

What's the fun in owning a kayak if you don't drill holes in it? The Hobie thru-hull wiring kit is the ideal solution, IMHO.

Just watched a tutorial on it. Has anyone used the Lowrance scupper transducer mount on the Hobie Islands?

Without knowing what your hull/scupper looks like I'll tell you a couple things I did.

One time to just test out everything before the final install, I used the transom mount transducer that came with the unit and found something that worked better than expected. I ran a some 1/4" bungie material thru the bolt hole and up thru the scupper along with the wire and hooked the bungie to the nearest pad eye.  I was surprised that it held the transducer snug and level against the hull so I went on a few trips like that with no issues. Had a water proof battery setup above deck so at the end of the day, pull the plug, unhook the bungie and it all came off and went into a box.

As for batteries I've used 8AA battery holder blocks but found as FF have progressed they use more power and go thru those batteries pretty quick which I imagine would be true of a portable FF with self contained batteries, If I was gonna go that route again I'd get a battery holder that used D cells.

I have a feeling you know all this already but thought I'd throw it out there.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Lowrance makes a portable pack unit in a couple different varieties.

Pat R's mounts are what you want for the mounting the fish finder like in this pic.  Use a duct seal method and run your wires under the front hatch.  Use any fish finder, not some bulky portable unit that is really made for things like ice fishing.  More on how I installed my FF on my AI: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=38441.0

Here's how I've done all my FFs. No holes to run wires through.
Now, instead of using a pool noodle for the water bath I use duct putty with some plastic wrap over it so it's not sticky to work with.
No problems at all.

I put the battery in the rear hatch, and put the thru hull thing inside the pocket. The FF cables stay out of the way (inside the pocket) when not in use.
