For those of you who know me, know that I'm a freshwater Bass and panfish guy.  I'm really looking forward to Albion and future trips to the coast but, I don't have a clue to what's needed as far as rod and reel set up as well as what type of Jigs, terminal tackle needed.

If you guys can give me a few ideas of what Is needed.  I'm thinking. Couple of rods and reels, line weight, terminal tackle needed.   Jigs, swim baits, and whatever.  Don't need the most expensive gear,  but would like quality gear..

Thanks in advance

Tony

My setup

60lb braid to 20-30lb mono leader.

3-8 oz iron (like p-line laser minnow) or 3-8 oz leadhead with swimbait or curly tail. Bighammer swimbaits are popular, as are Branson baits (made by an NCKA member).

You can totally get by on some of the higher end bass reels (curado 300, abu revo etc.) I prefer lever drags like the small avets.

Rods: I like Trevalla mh, but uglystics are popular. Anything that can handle your jig will be fine.

I don't like shrimp flies, so ask someone else about that  :smt003

I hope that helps!

A basic, cheap but good set up for rod and reel for me would be A Ugly stick tiger Lite medium action paired with an Abu Garcia C3 reel. I personally use a shimano Calcutta 400b with 30# braid paired with shimano trevala jigging rid medium. This is my all around setup in the ocean for NorCal fishing. I've caught halibut to 30#, king salmon, your typical lingcod and rockfish with this setup. Some people even use freshwater reels paired with swimbait rods. But it will break your reel fast.

As for tackles, rockfish are one of the dumbest and easiest to catch out there. You can get away with a hi/low leader hooked with squid, anchovy or any bait you choose and you'll catch them. Most people will fish with swimbait With 4oz lead head. Another basic set up is shrimp flies. You can buy them rigged already and all you have to do is attach to your main line. Use 4-6 oz sinker depending on drift. Bottom line, there's tons of combination you can use for rockfish.

Leadheads are gonna be your hardest thing to find at tackle retailers.  Fortunately for us, there is a local guy who pours by far the most popular style of leadheads - the 4 oz shad head.

Here is his classifieds thread.

It's actually a kite spool made by this guy but you can most definitely use it as a hand line spool
