I always use a radio.  And, I am sometimes an idiot as well.  But, I always use a radio.

In addition to a radio, you might want to consider a PLB.

Or an InReach. It cost money for the subscription. You can text and email for communication when you don't have cell service and get emergency rescue.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

Anyone still use Nokia? I have a charger.

 Just got this radio:
http://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-marine--vhf95db-dual-band-floating-handheld-vhf-radio--16230526
Dual band vhs and frs (Motorola radios) to talk to family and friends on shore. Like it so far and it wasn't that expensive.
Why do others think about this radio?

I have a much older version of that radio.  Mine gets vhf, am/FM & air channels.  Had this radio over 10 years & still going strong.  I think mine is the West Marine VHF250 handheld.
