I decided at the last minute to take advantage of the good weather and to get the RF carcasses out of my freezer.  The surf was moderate with a few boomers but manageable.  Since I had my Danielson crab trap I was a little nervous about going out and coming back in.

I dropped my trap off in 40 to 45 FOW where the FF showed a flat bottom and using landmarks, it was lined up with the Taco Bell.  I ended up checking it once an hour and moving it around.  I managed to get two keeper Dungies (6.5" and 7") and throwing back at least 15 under Dungies and 2 rock crab.

Timing wise I dropped my trap at about 9:00 and got off the water at 12:00.  I decided to bag it when the wind picked up at 11:00.  When I was loading up Andrew, Malibu Two drove in and he had planned to drop his crab trap for an overnight soak.   There were plenty of crab but I only saw the small ones.  I'd be curious to find out if an overnight soak is better than moving the trap around so often.  In between pulling up the crab trap I trolled around hoping to bag a striper like Danglin did.

When I was coming in I saw a couple of guys cruising around in a small aluminum boat.  I don't want to jump to conclusions but isn't that what the crab poachers have been doing?

No pictures but it was a crystal clear day and there were a ton of surfers out.  Mooch, there were many women out today in their skin tight wetsuits...may be you should take up surfing?

i have seen overnight soaks turn up empty. while at linda mar i pulled each 10 minutes and got limit in under an hour sometimes. it all depends on water and luck i think.

i too have seen al boats out there. i think they just go through traps. i dont think that even if they go through traps its considered poaching. its still legal i think.

Andrew mentioned that the recent storms may have pushed the crab into deeper water so I guess I was lucky to come home with something.  He also said that he was going to use Humbolt squid for bait so I would expect his trap to be loaded as long as the poachers don't mess with his trap.

Oh yeah, I also got to watch some private planes buzz the beach.  There were 3 of them following each other and they were about 50 ft off the deck.  When I waved at one he waved back and I could see his face very clearly.  They were going south and had to pull up and make a turn to fly in between the rocks at the point.  And people call us crazy...

I drove by LM on my way to HMB for the Surf class. I did see 2 fellas with a yellow yak getting ready to head out.

Gary, I don't really think the surfers like us kayakers  :smt011
