I am looking for a career change and after much discussion with my wife, I decided to start the process of achieving a life-long dream of working for either the department of fish and game as a game wardon, or working for BLM or the Forest Service as a Ranger.  If anyone has information that would be helpful in this pursuit I would greatly appreciate it.  Just going back to school for a new degree is going to hard enough so any assistance would be appreciated.

Man what a thankless job

Up in northern cal I knew guys who'd pop off rounds into the woods when they knew f&g was sniffing around   Not worth the kind of pay they get

Now is a great time to look into F&G. They are way down on manpower and need qualified people. Most Wardens use their house as their office. How great would that be? Here is a link to what jobs are open (non law enforcement) and Here is the Warden (law enforcement).

CHEERS!

Most folks who do these type of jobs don't really do it for the money! If your the type who likes to give back or likes to enjoy the outdoors and take the risk that come with that type of position then I say go for it. This type of work can be very fullfilling with each day having some very mundane and routine times. However, the adrenalin can be very addicting!

If I were independantly wealthy I'd become a fishery biologist.  They need more people over there can tell foundations and their grants to F off and do controversial work that isn't just a litany of unquantifyable buzzwords and dodgy use of models and statistics.

Ya gotta re engineer your game plan Bro.  They will take the grant you refused and drop it into the pocket of the nearest politician who will then say F off to your real research and tell the public they are pro enviro and have support from afforemnentioned "Foundation" to verify it.  You must first become a politician, then you can accept all the pac/special interest/contribution money and become independantly wealthy.  When you're at that point you can tell foundation X to take a hike.

On the Topic.

Joel, I can see you being a Warden.  Of course we'd expect daily fish reports!

That's not entirely true, Coastside is involved in a research project on the release mortality of rockfish.  We need more such projects, and there are plenty of people on the sportmen's side that will use such information effectively.  Right now we're always saying "that's obvious bull.." but we lack the ability to demonstrate it in a scientific manner.

For example, the inverse relationship between spawners and parr in the klamath river clearly shows that a management strategy that attemps to maximize the number of spawners if fundamentally flawed.  Someone needs to do a thourough study on that topic and release a report that condemns the current management strategy and offers alternatives to maximize the number of parr that survive to the ocean instead.  Right now thats probably the single most important piece of work we could do out here to help sport (and commercial) fishermen and benefit everyone in the state,  but it's not being done.

I guess I'm spoiled being in a career where competency and quality are required and rewarded.
