Hey Duane - Just checked out the posts on the Fred Hall Show - sorry I missed it - I'm sure I could've learned a lot. I noticed Insaneduane's crab pot bouy design and thought that should of course work on an anchor set-up as well. I'm working out an anchor rig now and was wondering if you, ( Duane ), could post a discription or better yet some photos showing how they work? The bouy seems like a great place to store the line but then how do you keep any excess in place if you don't use the entire line on a set? I for one, would appreciate any sharing of info on this. Thanks, Tom

Duane's bouy design is INSANELY brilliant.  It will absolutely work as an anchor buoy and will do a superb job of storing excess line.

He has a bungee cord that crosses the spool to stop the flow of line from the spool wherever you want to stop it.  Then the line gets routed through the spring on the end to keep the buoy pointing the right direction while it is afloat.

I think he should patent it...

Yup... I must admit... I thought it was a little over the top at first (forgive me Duane)... but when I took a closer look, it was a smartly designed especially with the spring thing.

Seems like Duane's idea has real potential, especially since it can be used for both anchors and traps.  But if he really wants to consider patenting it he really would need to do the research and submit a patent application fairly soon.  The "One-Year Rule" dictates that once an inventor offers an invention for sale, sells it, publishes it or uses it publicly or commercially, he must file a patent application within one year for it to be valid.  The courts have held a patent invalid where an inventor showed her invention to people at a party without restrictions and filed her patent application over a year later (Nolo Press). The display at the Fred Hall Show might start that one year clock ticking...but it might have even started when Duane first showed his design plans online at the end of December.

Don't forget that a patent is only as good as the money available to back it.

Marmite, has Duane already posted the plans for the bouy on this site or another site? I,m trying to imagine how the spring element works, for me a picture is truely worth a thousand words! I hope he can post some for those who haven't seen his design yet. Tom

Thanks Doug! That helps a lot. I'd still like to see a photo of the finished rig though. The folding winder handle and the 'pig-tail' parts are up for interpretation. Maybe just winding the line back on without the revolving end would work as well and be simpler to build?

You certainly could just wind the line on the narrowed part of the float.  A lot simpler but it would detract from the "elegance" of Duane's solution.

It's amazing how this contraption works and a nice neat setup.

Yeah, that's definitely true.  Patents usually only help big guys keep little guys down.  They can also be a bitch to get, I've been working on a patent (not fishing related) for 2 years now and it's still not approved.  "Patent pending" is sufficiently threatening for most small time folks though.  ;)
