I use one of two rods: an ancient Zebco oceanside fiberglass or a custom Calstar grafighter composite. Both ends of the spectrum, no?

Thanks for the reassurance about the humming. Haven't heard a fish complain yet, so it must be just me.

Thanks everyone, I guess it can't hurt to give it a try. Hopefully Mid May I can get out for another Butt chasing adventure. Hopefully they are in and active in monterey. I thought about throwing a spinner bait from my Bass box on to a trolling rig just to see.
Maybe a new thread soon. Rock fish on bass gear. I am chucking spinners at the next school I see. I will post pics if the site would cooperate with my phone.

Cheers everyone.
I only fish on days that end with Y

wonder if the trout trolling type of multi bladed flasher would be easier to use?

From what I've heard dodgers are more sensitive  to speed changes . Therefore it may be harder to get the desired action with a dodger than it is a flasher

Yes, but flashers also require some decent speed to turn over as well.  I was thinking of trying the Konezone type might work well, with maybe a chain swivel:

You can pull the 00 pretty slow and still get a good sway, even a flutter.  Flashers at speed buck and dance a lot, when halibut are trailing a bait I prefer a more predictable/less erratic bait. When not at the right speed they aren't doing their job, I'd say in those scenarios they're actually more sensitive to speed changes.

I should also note that when I say flasher, I mean hot spot flashers and other s like them.  The term flasher is used pretty broadly now, there are also the kone zone style flashers like al posted which aren't quite as erratic and inline flashers like the big al fish flash, which just spin and will run straight with very little resistance.

Has anybody ever tried this with a downrigger? Last year, I caught a halibut off the DR. That was a fluke (in more ways than one...), but I keep thinking that under the right conditions, it might not be a completely crazy idea.

Thanks for sharing the video. I really enjoy watching those underwater shots of fish attacking a presentation.

If you're "bounce balling" correctly, your bait is moving along in a start-stop motion. The big cannonball hits the bottom, hangs for a second, your rod loads up a little, then it breaks loose and moves forward. Hits bottom again, rod loads up, repeat... I don't think this start/stop motion is conducive to flashers that are supposed to do a full rotation (like the big Pro Troll ones). Kone zone would give off some flash, but it wouldn't give your bait any action.
