Trinidad still closed. The only thing we really gained that's convenient is the mouth of the eel. Shelter Cove is just as far as Brookings and Brookings has been open for months.

They say the ocean waters of humboldt bay.. wtf does that even mean ? Outside the jaws ? I couldnt get an answer and i dont really want to just go and drop some gear out of king salmon and get nailed..  Mouth of the eel it may be for me. Drop some gear then paddle over and perch fish.

Humboldt Bay is open for Dungeness and the ocean is open south of a lin drawn due west from the north jetty.   It's all still closed for rock crab.

The bar is currently unsafe and will be until it's dredged. The shoaling where we usually slip out along th south jetty breaks huge. The surfers have noticed and you can find them there. The bay has never been a great Dungeness producer for me. A few legals here and there. It's a fantastic rock crab fishery with easy limits. But that's still closed.

I've seen a few YouTube videos of people down in the Bay Area using crab snares to catch crabs. The kind you cast off from a fishing rod. Are those productive out here in Humboldt waters?

They will work, but are not nearly as effective as hoop nets or traps.

Don't buy a crab hawk, they aren't legal in California.  You can use them in Oregon if you go there.

Don't buy a trap.  CA laws are changing on August 1st and most of the commercially available traps don't meet the new law, including all of the most popular ones that kayakers use.  They should be coming out with compliant traps soon.

So just use a hoop net.

Thanks for the heads up. I forgot about those regulation changes. I'm guessing my best luck will be using a hoop from my kayak also, right? Pretty new to the crabbing scene. I was hoping to get into the razor clams this year also, but that ended up being a huge bummer so far.

Working hoop nets is standard.  In places where other fishing is open or if you want ot soak overnight, use a trap.

Razor clams aren't open.  They have toxic levels of domoic acid and they retain the toxin longer than any other species.  Don't eat razor clams this year until we get the all clear.  The better grounds are only open in odd numbered years anyways.

I would probably just stick to using hoop nets for the crab. Yeah, I know the razor clams aren't open. I was saying it's really a bummer because I was looking forward to trying clamming for the first time this year. I'm hopeful that when next year rolls around, they levels of domoic acid will be acceptable.
