Other than steelhead, the main attraction in the Russian River is smallmouth bass.

You are incorrect.

During the weekend in question the main attraction will be the hotties in small swimsuits floating down the river.

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Other than steelhead, the main attraction in the Russian River is smallmouth bass. Bring some small plastic grubs and crawfish imitating lures, and toss those into any deeper holes and pockets you come across. They also like to hide in the brush at the edges of the river.

Good luck!

Other than steelhead, the main attraction in the Russian River is small little Asses. :smt005 Seems like fishing is not something you want to do around that time  with the river up there will be a lot of small little asses floating down the river drinking the party float( along with some big ones!) :smt005

Believe me, I am all in on the hottie watch! We set up a little riverside resort on the shore by our cabin (right at Del Rio, where seasonal dam anchorage was just recently removed) and enjoy the show that floats by on the Fourth! In Healdsburg, that scene starts where the public put-in is on Redwood Road, on the back of Fitch Mtn. The stretch I'm gonna fish on, is way too long of a float for the tubers.

Did not know about the catfish on the river, how are they on artificial baits?

Will I have any luck mid day, in general, or should I really get an early start? I'm not the lazy one, it's just that I'm going to have to roust you-know-who to drive me up to the put-in, she's not too good early in the am...

I've caught plenty of fish during the middle of the day. There are so many people that the fish get used to them. I've caught a number of fish within a few feet of swimmers/floaters/dogs playing fetch.
